More often than not, I moan on and on about how WWE lack creative wit and long term thinking and it’s quite rare for me to compliment them. But credit must be given where it’s due and on Monday night, I felt it was due. Here are three things WWE got very much right on Monday Night Raw:
Triple H vs Dolph Ziggler
It’s been three years since we’ve seen Triple H compete on Raw, and when this match was made “impromptu” on Raw, I honestly thought it was a joke, and somehow the match wouldn’t happen, but I’m glad it did.
In a solid back and forth match, where Triple H sold perfectly, as did Ziggler, there were small reminders of the Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels era. But seeing the WWE World Heavyweight champion in action, being Triple H, on Raw was very subtly and powerfully a positive sign. Anyone tuning in would have felt WrestleMania season.
Roman Reigns Return
Following a Triple H victory over Dolph Ziggler, the no so anticipated return of Roman Reigns occurred, and booked with brilliance. Roman returning now is a good sign as it’ll hopefully lead to a more gritty story heading to the biggest wrestling event of the year. Roman returning with a different entrance and kicking the crap out of Triple H was shades of TLC (the brief moment Reigns got over with the crowd).
While this did not have as big an impact as TLC, it sure helped the cause. The smart booking even lead Reigns to push referees and hit Triple H with a TV screen and ultimately lead backstage – away from the crowd. This shielded some of the boo’s from the crowd as did the beat down. We all wanted Reigns to promo less and kick ass more, well that’s what WWE gave us.
Undertaker Speaks
In what has been a confusing yet intriguing storyline of Shane McMahon vs. The Undertaker, it has been strange not really knowing the Phenom’s motives. Monday was great stepping stone in getting to hear the Undertaker speak.
Yes he looked his age and his hair looks like a 20 year old worn out mop, but that doesn’t take away from his presence and legacy. With Taker also running after Vince McMahon (and failing to catch the 70 year old) we also have a bit of intrigue as to why Taker is fighting for Vince while also trying to destroy him. Maybe there’s another twist in the tale?
All I have to say is, keep progression like this coming. A special mention of the touching moment of Mick Foley passing the barbed wire baseball bat to Dean Ambrose in a heart warming passing of the torch. A perfect segment which should have been done in the ring.
That’s all from me. Feel free to comment and let me know what you think. Til next time.
