For much of the past 10 years, John Cena and AJ Styles have been the standard bearers for whatever company that they were working for. Many fans have wondered what would happen if the 2 of them ever got the opportunity to share the ring together. It’s really been the most-anticipated “dream match” that has yet to happen…until last Monday night.
John Cena made his big return to the WWE and Monday Night Raw after being out since October of 2015. Because Styles only signed with the WWE in January of this year, their paths had never crossed before. Cena put it out there that the “new era” in WWE still has to go through him, which brought out AJ Styles. When AJ first came out, it appeared that he was just coming out to show some respect for Cena, until his boys, Gallows and Anderson, came out and looked as if they were going to continue their demolition over the WWE roster, this time on Styles and Cena. But, we got a complete heel turn from Styles as he pummeled Cena. As a side note, a truly amazing thing did happen: The universally-beloved Styles attacking Cena got Styles booed out of the building and Cena sympathy from everybody, including the middle-age men who can’t wait to boo Cena and sing “John Cena sucks” during his intro music.
The potential for this match happening for me has personally made me mark out. I am an unabashed supporter of both men, both for their passion to be the best at what they do and the way they have handled themselves outside of the ring. It is the standard-bearer of the WWE from 2005 to now against the longtime standard-bearer of TNA, WWE’s main competition, from 2002-2013. There are so many variables this could go. It looks like this match will happen at “Money In the Bank”. With “The Club” back together in WWE, it looks like Cena will be out-numbered at every moment. Who will Cena get to help him out? New Day? I’d rather not. The Usos? Please not again. I suggest that the good ol’ American boy gets American Alpha from NXT, to me the 2nd coming of the Steiner Brothers, and start leaning towards a Club vs. Cena and American Alpha program. With the brand split, American Alpha will definitely be called up and they can sure hang with anybody in the ring. The rub they get from teaming with Cena will be huge for them. All 6 men could put together matches that could be Match of the Year candidates and we would all benefit from that.
