#205Live – Cruiserweight Corner Monthly: September (@xterblack)

Welcome to this month’s edition of Cruiserweight Corner. Come on in, look in awe, there’s plenty of room cos all our guys are going to Raw!

New Time. New Day. Fresh Start?

One of the biggest and most recent pieces of news pertaining to the purple brand is the decision that WWE has moved 205 Live from their late Tuesday night slot on the WWE Network to a much earlier, pre-NXT slot on Wednesday evenings.

Personally, the linear schedule of the WWE Network has no impact on my viewing habits outside of PPVs. Being from England, most of what I watch on the network is through the on-demand service but I do feel this is the right move for 205 Live. It will give WWE the time to edit shows (should they need too) making the content feel tighter and more polished than it already is.

205’s Raw Talent.

Monday 3rd September. I wake up in the middle of the night and check my phone to see that Dolph Ziggler & Drew McIntyre were now Raw Tag Team Champions and Drake Maverick was acting as the manager for AOP. I’m sorry, what?

The image of Maverick stood between Akam and Rezar immensely but now that it’s settled, aged and matured – its a genius move. The former Rockstar Spud is the guy who made losing to King Maxel entertaining. He’s also the guy who has revitalised 205 Live so with that being said, does Maverick’s inclusion create more exposure for 205 Live or are they simply testing the waters to move Maverick onto Raw permanently?

Another member of the roster pulling duty this week was Lio Rush who appeared in a Bobby Lashley vignette. Is this the start of the Man Of The Hour becoming a mouthpiece for Lashley? If so, it’ll give Rush a bigger platform to showcase his charisma but it’ll be interesting to see if they go for a Heel/Face dynamic or if Lashley turns in the coming weeks.

Buddy Murphy’s Homecoming

On Saturday, October 6th, WWE is holding yet another special international event as they present Super Show-Down live from Melbourne, Australia. Naturally, WWE is including Sydney born tag team The IIconics on the show but all eyes should be cast on Melbourne’s own Buddy Murphy who has been abruptly thrust back into the Cruiserweight Championship picture ready for his match against Cedric Alexander at the big show.

Murphy has had a pretty impressive month on 205 Live post Summerslam with singles wins over Gran Metalik and his Lucha House Party stablemate, and former cruiserweight champion, Kalisto. We’ve all seen how spectacular both Murphy & Alexander’s matches have been and I’d put good money down on Super Show-Down being no different. However, there is a long-standing tradition in WWE that if the event is taking place in your hometown, you are more than likely going to be embarrassed, especially as Murphy’s a heel. But will he be cheered down under? Time will tell.

Where would they be on the PPV?

So it seems the cruisers are only to be featured on WWE’s monthly shows when one of the Big 4 rolls around. After a solid showing at Summerslam (albeit with a controversial roll up finish), Cedric Alexander successfully defended the Cruiserweight Championship against Drew Gulak much to the chagrin of the Philly Submission Machine. Naturally, given the finish to the match, a rematch should be in the works so, once again, if I were to decide where 205 Live would be featured on the Hell In A Cell card, I would book Alexander Vs. Gulak II but this time in a Submission Match. This match would turn the division on its head making Alexander the underdog versus the well versed in the stipulation, Drew Gulak.

That’s it from me this month, follow me on Twitter @xterblack if you want to chat some more about 205 Live.
