This Sunday, WWE presents to us one of the most exciting Royal Rumble’s of recent memory with not just the standard 30 man Rumble, but for the first time ever a 30 women over the top rope bout.
A lot has been speculated about who could be returning, who may or may not make a spectacular comeback from injury to be a part of the Rumble, so the excitement is higher than has been the case in previous years.
I’m going to look at 3 superstars who I would love to win the 30 man Royal Rumble match 2018.
Dolph Ziggler
This is a long shot, and I don’t even know his current WWE status, but wouldn’t that be a great swerve? He won the United States title at the end of last year, before vacating it the Smackdown Live episode after, and we haven’t seen him since. What if Dolph were to enter in the later stages and pull of a shock upset? Would people buy it? It would raise a few eyebrows, sure, but if you think about it, everyone knows he has the talent, the ability and the charisma to be the complete package superstar in WWE. If he were to win the Royal Rumble, a match against AJ Styles for the WWE Title would be an almost guaranteed success and an excellent match, regardless of the outcome.
How likely is this to happen? Well, the way WWE have booked Ziggler over the past year tells you there is no expecting anything, but the whole vacating the U.S title has to be going somewhere, right? What if that was all part of his story to leave that stage of his career behind and move up to the main event on his own terms?
As a longtime Dolph fan, this would be quite the moment, and honestly, a big shock to all, which is exactly what WWE needs right now.
Finn Bálor
Who says that Finn can’t face Brock Lesnar? Why should superstars be defined by their weight class? Wouldn’t a Bálor Royal Rumble win followed by a victory against Lesnar at Wrestlemania 34 be an amazing shift in the stereotype of ‘small guys can’t beat big guys’ WWE policy? It’d open up a brand new landscape in the division.
Is a Bálor victory likely to happen? I would say at this point probably not, only due to the fact that WWE are starting to progress a Bálor Club stable and to have Finn win the Rumble may cast Gallows & Anderson into the shadows early on, unless they made a major play in the tag team division.
Nobody can question Bálor’s ability or belonging in the main event scene of Monday Night Raw, he was a ready made superstar coming in from NXT in 2016, before his unfortunate injury whilst becoming the first ever Universal Champion.
A Wrestlemania main event of Finn Bálor challenging Brock Lesnar would definitely open some eyes in the pro wrestling industry, and provide a middle finger to those so called ‘insiders’ with their telescopes all the way into the WWE locker rooms to find out the spoilers.
Like with Ziggler’s case, we don’t know where WWE are going with Bálor right now, as he still doesn’t have a clear goal, but his involvement with the likes of Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Scott Hall and D-X at the recent 25th Anniversary of Raw would indicate there are big plans ahead for Finn, and let’s hope it starts with a victory this Sunday at the Royal Rumble.
The Miz
Now, admittedly, this may seem bias, because I’ve been a Mizfit from the very beginning, and I want him to win every year. However, this year I genuinely think he has a realistic chance of being the last man standing at the Royal Rumble.
Despite consistently performing well for years in the company, fans have only just started to realise what an entertaining superstar he is, and his stock and overall reputation has never been higher in the pro wrestling industry. In fact, he was even recently named Rolling Stones ‘Wrestler of The Year’, which is a big claim in itself, although I’d personality use the title ‘WWE Superstar of The Year’.
His work both on Smackdown Live and on Monday Night Raw have been impossible to ignore and admire, the way he builds feuds and continues them both verbally and in the ring has earned well deserves critical respect. Now having surpassed 10 years with the company, he is oddly enough to say, one of the veterans of the locker room, having seen many superstars come and go, yet he remains, why? Because he can do his work as a WWE Superstar like no other.
He recently reclaimed his Intercontinental Title on the 25th Anniversary of Raw by defeating Roman Reigns, so that could lessen his odds of winning, but then again Miz has proved in the past he can be a multiple champion and bring prestige to each title. I’m not usually in favour of IC/U.S/Tag Champions chasing after World Heavyweight titles, but in if there’s one man that could do it, it’s Miz.
So why should he win the Royal Rumble? Well, realistically, is there a chance of him beating Brock Lesnar? Not really, but then this is the man that defied the odds by not only winning Money In The Bank back in 2010, but successfully cashing it in on Randy Orton to the shock of everyone and become WWE Champion. He would then go on to defy the odds again by successfully defending that same title against John Cena in the MAIN EVENT of Wrestlemania in 2011, which hardly anybody could see coming.
Could the ‘most must see’ WWE Superstar have another sightseeing moment up his sleeve?
