Remember the Rumble? Of course we’ll remember the Royal Rumble, it’s one of the most anticipated events of the year amongst WWE fans. Not only is it the beginning of the road to WrestleMania, it features one of the most fun matches in the form of the 30-man Royal Rumble match itself.
It’s at this time of year when people begin to start speculating as to who may be the man to win the Rumble match and go on to headline WrestleMania. Not only that, but fans get to thinking who might make a surprise return or appearance in the 30-man match.
Speaking of which, here are 5 of the people that we’d love to see as a surprise entrant in this year’s Royal Rumble…
Kurt Angle
Where better to start than with the recently announced first inductee to the WWE Hall of Fame class of 2017, Kurt Angle.
While there have been question marks over Angle’s in-ring WWE future, plus Vince’s apparent reluctance to see him wrestle another match, the fact that he is once again involved in a working relationship with WWE makes his in-ring return more likely than ever.
Could a return in the upcoming Royal Rumble be the perfect way to set-up a retirement match at this year’s WrestleMania?
Tye Dillinger
One of the surprise entrants that has been most speculated about is the long-awaited debut of the ‘Perfect 10’, Tye Dillinger.
Dillinger is more than ready to make the jump to WWE’s main roster and the Royal Rumble could be the best way to introduce him to the worldwide WWE audience. He is more over than he has ever been during his NXT run and now seems the perfect time (no pun intended) to capitalise on this momentum and elevate him to either Raw or Smackdown Live.
The fans are desperate to see Tye debut as a surprise entrant at the Royal Rumble, and specifically as the number 10 entrant in the match, please do this WWE!
Samoa Joe
Another man that is more than ready to be elevated from NXT is former NXT Champion, Samoa Joe.
With Joe only wrestling a dark match at the recent NXT tapings, speculation has intensified that he will be imminently debuting on WWE’s main roster, perhaps at the Royal Rumble. Many people have even gone as far to say that Samoa Joe is set to win the Royal Rumble match, with odds recently being slashed to make him one of the front-runners.
If there was ever a superstar who could come from NXT and be placed straight into WWE’s main event scene, it’s Samoa Joe. He is a legitimate superstar and has the experience, skill and star power to headline a WrestleMania if he were indeed to win this year’s Royal Rumble.
Finn Balor
Since suffering the most untimely of injuries at this past year’s SummerSlam, speculation began that Finn Balor will return and win the Royal Rumble so he could go on to reclaim his WWE Universal Championship at WrestleMania.
While this is something that many fans would love to see happen, doubts still remain over his recovery from the shoulder injury that led to him relinquishing the championship. Nevertheless, the return of the ‘Demon King’ at the Rumble would be welcomed by fans and he would certainly be a worthy winner.
Also, a WrestleMania match against Kevin Owens would be fantastic and could be what Owens needs to finally legitimise him as a main event talent, that’s obviously if he is to remain champion going into WrestleMania.
Kenny Omega
Arguably the most talked about wrestler of 2017 so far is New Japan Pro Wrestling’s Kenny Omega.
Omega put on one of the most best matches in recent memory at this year’s Wrestle Kingdom 11 and then sent the internet into a frenzy when he suggested that he could soon be leaving NJPW. This inevitably led to speculation that he is on his way to WWE and will debut at the Royal Rumble.
The signing of Kenny Omega has been both teased and denied by people within WWE and while I think it’s unlikely that he’ll appear, there is still a small amount of hope and we can still dream. One thing is for sure, an appearance from him at this year’s Royal Rumble would be huge.
