Davie’s Dungeon: Stardust… Really?

Welcome to the dungeon!

Having decided to not watch RAW for a few weeks, I logged on to the WWE website to see what I missed. There was one thing that baffled me and that was Stardust. Who the hell thought it would be beneficial to Cody Rhodes to take on a persona that mirrors his brothers?

I am a huge fan of Cody and I think he has the potential to be a main-event star in the future. He isn’t the biggest superstar but neither is Daniel Bryan and he made it. Rhodes is a joy to watch in the ring, very talented and he possesses good mic skills.

Throughout his WWE career he has had some high points and low points. His time with Legacy looked like he was going to be set up to be a huge star, he was in the main storylines and his future looked bright. Sadly once Legacy disbanded he went down in the pecking order when he was drafted to Smackdown.

Even though he was great to watch as ‘Dashing Cody Rhodes’, I couldn’t help but feel it wasn’t going to do him any good in the long run. There are certain stars that just need to be themselves on TV with the volume turned up and I think Rhodes is one of them.

Stupid gimmicks are fine for lower to mid-card talent who are never going to be pushed but when the WWE has someone as talented as Cody Rhodes, they need to let him be himself. I was pleased when he won the Intercontinental Championship and even though he had a lengthy run with the title, he wasn’t able to truly make a mark for himself.

Being the Intercontinental Champion used to mean that you are being set up to be propelled into the main-event scene but it didn’t happen. Sadly he ended up teaming with Damien Sandow. This should never have happened.

Cody’s career seemed to be going backwards once he teamed with Sandow. It was a good team and they were entertaining but for Cody to be a future main-event star, he needs to be pushed as a singles competitor.

When Goldust returned to team with his brother it was a breath of fresh air. They were fantastic to watch at first and it seemed like the tag-team division was really taking off. I feel now though, their team has run its course. It was great to see Goldust return and look better than ever in the ring but now it’s time for Cody to break out on his own.

I didn’t expect to see Cody appear as a rip-off of the Goldust character on RAW, I can’t see what it’s going to do for his career. There was only one thing that was good about it and that was they looked like a real tag-team in matching ring gear.

Maybe this could finally lead to the Goldust/Cody feud that has been talked about for a long time, but if it’s just to try and inject a bit of life back into their team then it will do more harm than good. I’m intrigued to see how it plays out but I feel like Goldust needs to take a step back and let Cody break out on his own.

The WWE needs to put some faith in him and give him a worthwhile storyline to let the fans get behind him and stay behind him.
