Under the Spotlight – The Ascension

How’s it going, folks?

There’s a lot happening in the life of good ol’ AOB right now, mainly to do with college and whatnot, so today’s article is going to be very brief. If I’m going to keep uploading new content every Sunday, I’ll have to get a bit more familiar with timetables and stuff like that, just so I can find the time to write (or better yet, think of what to write about).

Since there’s not much to talk about from the world of Raw or Smackdown these days, I’m going to keep in line with what I did last week and talk about NXT. More specifically, I’ll be discussing The Ascension and how I would like to see their rise to the main roster handled.

As you may know, Konnor and Viktor recently had the NXT Tag-Team Championship taken from them by Kalisto and Sin Cara at NXT Takeover, after a ruthless reign over the last year. And like I said last week, I feel that the only reason for taking the belts away should be to bring The Ascension up to the main roster to give the WWE Tag-Team division a breath of fresh air.

Now I’m not sure if they’ll be coming up immediately, especially after their encounter with Kenta (now known as Hideo Itami) on Thursday Night, but the guys make a fantastic team and I think the main roster would really benefit from having them debut.

We even saw them in a bigger capacity this week on Main Event, as they defeated Los Matadores in front of a big WWE audience. They don’t need to change anything about themselves, because what they’re doing now has helped them become arguably the most dominant tag-team in WWE today. And with their sheer dominance, I think they’d have a spectacular rivalry with the Usos, should the opportunity present itself.

If it was up to me, I’d have Jimmy and Jey defeat Goldust and Stardust at Night of Champions, only for Konnor and Viktor to come out of nowhere and deliver total, utter annihilation. And maybe the next night they can have their first match against one of WWE’s lower level teams like Slater Gator or Los Matadores again.

I’d compare this to a mixture of The Shield and Paige’s WWE debuts. They’d come in out of nowhere and destroy the Usos, much like Ambrose, Rollins and Reigns did to Ryback at Survivor Series 2012, and they’d very quickly become the new champions like Paige did. Not necessarily in their debut match, but close enough.

The one flaw is that I don’t think WWE has enough teams for The Ascension to face, should their reign be as long as it was in NXT. I would love to see them as the faces of the tag-team division for the next year, but there aren’t many credible babyface teams for them to compete against.

Sure, they could face the Usos maybe two PPVs in a row after their debut, but then what? There really isn’t anyone else at that level. My suggestion would be to turn the Wyatt Family and have Harper and Rowan face them in a long-running rivalry, because all four dudes are so psychotic that the feud would be mesmerising.

I’ll leave that one up to WWE’s creative team, but all I know is that The Ascension is more than ready to be brought up. Over the last year, they’ve constantly been proclaiming that “We Will Rise”, so I think it’s due time that they rise up to the main roster.

That’ll have to do it for today. Hopefully I’ll have something a bit more insightful and thought-provoking next week, but you could say the very same thing about Raw and Smackdown, so don’t blame me. In all seriousness though, I did like Raw this week, especially the Steel Cage Match, the NXT guys and Cena’s encounter with Heyman. But Jerry Springer and the Bella twins really brought down the mood.

Be sure to share my stuff on Twitter and Facebook if you think it’s worthy enough, and I’ll be sure to keep throwing out articles as the weeks go by, provided it’s humanly possible. You can also find me on Twitter @AdamOB_SLTD.

Finally, don’t hesitate to check out the rest of the site and its amazing content. It’s good stuff, so do yourself a favour and check it out.

Thanks for reading!
