The Voice of Reason: Predicting the Championship Tournament

Welcome back to The Voice of Reason only on SLTD Wrestling, and the last few weeks have definitely been eventful to say the least, especially with Seth Rollins out injured. Last week I covered the WWE’s potential lack of full time stars, but today I look at the potential for a new star to be crowned. As most of you should know by now, there is a tournament to crown the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion. In some ways, this is s bigger deal that what people may think. Theoretically, this could be the champion that takes us into WrestleMania, so let’s look at the potential winners of the tournament.

Roman Reigns
I guess this has to be the first name on this list, as not only was Roman Reigns the number one contender for wrestlings more prestigious title, but was also in line to beat Seth Rollins at either Survivor Series or TLC. By all means, the investment into Reigns has been paying off. After reaching the high of headlining WrestleMania, the Samoan Badass (not an official nickname) was yanked down to the bottom of the pile. He was given pretty standard feuds and matches, but was slowly building up his graces with the fans.

After some dangerous matches with the Big Show and eventually Bray Wyatt, Reigns has really come together and proven why he deserves the top star title. I think it’s without question that Roman is ready to be the main event guy and definitely will make it to the finals of this tournament. What he has been doing right, is letting his talent in the ring speak for itself, and will do that in this tournament.

Do I think he will win the tournament? Honestly I would love to see Roman Reigns pick up the title, as it has been a long time coming, and more than that, the storyline (although predictable) makes natural sense. As JR once said, shock value can be great, but not if it doesn’t fit the story. Ultimately, the only reason I would avoid a Reigns victory is a potential downturn from the fans. They might feel that he was just given the title as Rollins is out, whereas if he beat Rollins, it feels earned.

Dean Ambrose
Well, on to another member of the infamous Shield, and one that is more universally rallied over. Ambrose has been doing a great job with any feud he has been given. He has knocked it out of the park every time, has great matches and is one of the best on the mic at the moment. The problem he has faced, is the lack of meaning behind all of this. At any point, Ambrose could have picked up one of the mid card championships (basically he should have had the IC title instead of Ryback) but he didn’t.

Maybe this tournament is the due he deserves. There is something of a Stone Cold/CM Punk feel about Ambrose, and while his Lunatic Fringe persona is entertaining, I feel like he hasn’t really found himself yet. There is definitely a lot more potential than we are seeing and this is the perfect opportunity to get the Ambrose project back on track.

Could he win? Almost definitely. Will he? I guess this depends on whether Roman will pick up the title as it is clear he is their front runner.

Kevin Owens
Moving on to Fight Owens Fight, another great talker and in my opinion, the second top heel (behind Rollins) that WWE have. Although he is the IC Champion at the moment, there is always the chance of him winning both titles, like Rollins did with the U.S. Title.

From a storyline perspective, this could make complete sense. Owens started off in NXT, a brand created and ran by Triple H, a person who we have seen Owens collude with in the past. As a heel, the victory could be picked up clean or through interference, neither of which would hurt his persona. It would be sold that Roman Reigns turned down The Authority, who instead reached out to Kevin Owens to be the new top heel for the company.

With Rollins out for so long, there is a need and opportunity for someone to be the top heel of the company, the natural next step for Owens. Then to face off against Ambrose, Reigns and eventually Randy Orton and (hopefully) Daniel Bryan. This definitely makes for a mouthwatering title reign, especially with the prospect of Kevin Owens vs. Brock Lesnar looming.

Overall, I am going with the prediction that Ambrose faces off against Reigns in the final of the tournament at Survivor Series. It is the match that will draw the most attention and will be second to none as these competitors know each other overly well. The victor? I see a curve ball being thrown with Ambrose picking up the victory over Reigns, with a heel turn, and joining The Authority. Triple H’s offer to Roman Reigns this week on Raw was a definite hint of something. Let’s also keep in mind a ashes us cash-in!

Anyway, I’m very excited for Survivor Series, with some great matches and prospects looming. ‘Til next week.
