So this year has been an absolute rollercoaster for BWP and the ride is showing no signs of slowing down as we bounce into 2013. We’ve seen The Brand sent into exile, The Hammer hang up his boots, Baby Faced Pitbull turn on Steve Saxon and now BWP is heading into a new era as the board get set to appoint a new GM.
There’s been almost a laundry list of epic battles at every show we’ve seen: Cyanide beating Pitbull, CJ Banks & Davey Richards putting on a wrestling clinic, the rise of Rookie stars like Bam Bam Norton, Marc Morgan & Alex Kidd and the sheer brutality of the Chain match, which was only outdone by the intensity of the All or Nothing Denbigh Death Match.
We’ve seen so many things this year that I thought I’d share my highlights, as well as how I voted in the annual 2012 Britannia Wrestling Awards.
Match of the Year
CJ Banks & Pitbull vs The Brand – Saltney Tavern (28 January)
The Hammer vs Robbie E – Ffrith Beach Arena (07 April)
LGT vs Mark Haskins – Ffrith Beach Arena (07 April)
CJ Banks vs Davey Richards – Ffrith Beach Arena (10 August)
Pitbull vs Cyanide – Ffrith Beach Arena (10 August)
Noam Dar vs Kris Travis vs Martin Kirby – Ffrith Beach Arena (25 August)
LGT vs Tommy Gunn – Ffrith Beach Arena (25 August)
Cyanide vs Hammer – Denbigh Town Hall Br4wl (29 September)
Denbigh Death Match – Denbigh Town Hall Br4wl (29 September)
Steel Chain Match – Denbigh Town Hall Br4wl (29 September)
My Pick: CJ Banks vs Davey Richards (Ffrith Beach Arena 10th August)
This was an absolute classic match. which had everything that a wrestling fan wants. It also played a huge part in why I picked CJ as my wrestler of the year. Here’s why:
Wrestler of the Year –
Babyface Pitbull
CJ Banks
Craig Winters
Cyanide
Dylan Roberts
Jim King
Joey Starr
Lord Graham Thomas III
Red Saint
Shaun ‘The Hammer’ Davis
Tommy Gunn
Zack Gibson
My pick: CJ Banks
For one reason only. He says that he’s pound for pound, the best wrestler and he really is! I’ve yet to see this guy have a bad match anywhere, not just in BWP. He just brings out the best in everyone he faces. If you disagree, then just watch the above video again.
Rookie of the Year
Alex Kidd
Bam Bam Norton
Bobby Price
Craig Winters
Marc Morgan
Matty Matthews
Ryan Mounfield
The Executioner
Tom Hayden
Troy McCarthy
My Pick: Marc Morgan
I have to be honest and say I was a little torn on this one. I think the rookies are marked on a different scales to established stars. You can see that the work and train hard, but at the same time, you’ve got to have potential. With that in mind, I have to mention 2 guys: Marc Morgan & Alex Kidd. They’re both awesome guys with huge potential, but in the end, my vote had to go to the current BWP Rookie Champion.
Tag Team of the Year
Babyface Pitbull & CJ
Classic Combo
Hunter Brothers
Knights of the Squared Circle
New Breed
The Brand
Wild Boys
My Pick: New Breed
This was a tough one because there are so many teams that compliment each other’s styles and have that spark every time they get in the ring to compete. Now, you would think with my wrestler of the year in the mix here it would be a given who my pick would be, but it wasn’t. My vote went to the SLTD-born tag team New Breed. For those who don’t know, Greg and I picked these guys as a wild-card team to be entered into The Great British Tag Team Tournament and there’s no doubt that they’re going to win the gold.
Villain of the Year
Babyface Pitbull
CJ Banks
Craig Winters
Cyanide
Dean MacManus
DJ King
Jim ‘The Metal’ King
LGT
Marc Morgan
Zack Gibson
My Pick: DJ King
I didn’t even have to think about this one, not even for a second! If you don’t agree with me, then watch him cut a promo and see how brutal he can be. You’ll agree with me once you’ve seen it! 🙂
OMG Moment of the Year
Wild Boys/Yid/Jim Dance Off – Saltney Tavern (28 January)
Bam Bam Norton Wins Rookie Title On His BWP Debut – Nova Centre (03 June)
Jim King Turns On Yidster – Saltney Tavern (28 January)
CJ & Pitbull Win Tag Team Titles – Saltney Tavern (28 January)
Ciaran McConnell sucker punch to LGT – Ffrith Beach (10 August)
CJ Costs Pitbull Title – Ffrith Beach – Saturday 10 August
Steve Saxon/El Destello Unveiling (25 August)
LGT vs Tommy Gunn – Ffrith Beach Arena (25 August)
Denbigh Death Match – Denbigh Town Hall Br4wl (29 September)
Pitbull Attacks Saxon – Ffrith Beach Arena (27 October)
My Pick: Pitbull Attacks Saxon (Ffrith Beach Arena 27th October)
This was another tough one. I’ve seen so many crazy things in the last few months. Lord Graham Thomas III vs Tommy Gunn, which I actually announced at the event (true story), was a match that had pretty much everything. It was amusing to watch LGT take a bowling ball in the jewels! Tommy Gunn brought his A-game and threw LGT off the stage on to a metal cage fence.
We’ve mentioned this so many times on the blog and SLTD Radio lately, but if you’ve not seen The Denbigh Death Match, you won’t believe it.
My vote on this one had to go to Baby Faced Pitbull turning on Steve Saxon at a recent event. Out of everything we’ve seen this year, that stands out to me asthe OMG Moment of the Year. We’ve interviewed Pitbull on SLTD Radio so many times, but the most recent interview with Pitbull and his new manager Baz Mac had to be the most difficult one yet, because of his new attitude.
While BWP are reviewing their year, it would be wrong not to pick out a couple of noteworthy people I’ve had the honour to meet and work alongside.
Keith Myatt: absolute class act and total legend. If Myatt is on any card, you know 2 things: you’re going to have a blast and he can entertain all night long. Love him or hate him he deserves the title Legend.
Ciáran McConnell: if there is one guy I’ve seen who knows his abilities inside out, who knows exactly what he is and what he wants to be, its “Classic” Ciáran McConnell.
Well then, that’s who I picked and my votes are in and counted, so get your votes in if you want your favourite to win!
