Welcome, everyone to the latest edition of #MouthingOff (with MikeJC): Dynamite Weekly, the weekly review feature on AEW Dynamite here on SLTDWrestling.com. I will be giving my thoughts and opinions on all the highlights of the show as well as giving the “Remarkable Wrestler” of the week. So here are the highlights of the Wednesday, October 7th edition of AEW Dynamite, the Chris Jericho 30th Anniversary Show.
FTW Championship: Brian Cage (c) vs. Will Hobbs
Dynamite kicked off this week with a great match between two very athletic big men. Hobbs and Cage, have been going at each other for a couple weeks now and this was their first singles match. It was a pretty fun match with a lot of back and forth action. Hobbs looked very good in there with a guy like Cage who is very similar to him in size and athletic ability. Cage would ultimately get the victory, with the drill claw which doesn’t look great when done on a big man.
A note before the match Taz and Ricky Starks were on commentary for the match and Jim Ross called him Ricky Skaggs, so that happened. After the match Ricky Starks left commentary and entered the ring, Taz would get on the mic and offer Hobbs a spot on Team Taz or get a beating by Cage and Starks. Before Hobbs could answer, Darby Allin makes the save. Hobbs didn’t give Taz a response as the segment ends.
Segment Rating: 6/10
This was a pretty good match that I enjoyed, and what it did for me especially was show what Will Hobbs can truly do even in a loss and he has loads of potential. The thing I disliked was Darby Allin still being involved with Team Taz, his feud with Starks ended last week so Darby should be moving on from this. Putting Hobbs on Team Taz would actually be good way to get him over and him not having to talk since he hasn’t had a lot of promo time. Either way his future is bright, and Cage is still as good as he’s been for a while, the thing that didn’t make sense to me was it being for the FTW title that basically means nothing.
AEW Tag Team Championship: FTR (c) vs. TH2
As far as I know this is the first ever meeting between FTR and TH2, and man was it a hell of a match. FTR was kind of caught off guard at the high flying ability of Jack Evans, and the technical ability of Angelico, and they sold this great. FTR also did a hell of a job working on the leg and continuing the “cut off the ring style” that they are hands down the best at. Jack Evans spent a lot of time in the ring and had a lot of comeback offense. Angelico also showed great ability in the ring and at one point had a very cool looking double submission on both members of FTR. I was very happy that we got a definitive match finish and not a Tully Blanchard interference in this match because it was a great wrestling match. FTR would get the victory with a combination superplex-diving splash for the pin.
A note during the match we saw the Young Bucks watching the match on a screen backstage (presumably poking fun at WWE for the way they watch matches on screens) and after the match ended they said they didn’t know they were being filmed doing so and they superkicked the camera man then felt bad about it.
FTR was not happy about this and this would lead to The Best Friends showing a graphic of FTR in hotdog costumes, furthering the joke of them being “weenies”. The Best Friends would then announce they are the number 1 contenders for the tag team championships and they are receiving their shot next week. FTR would try a sneak attack but it would fail and they bale in the process.
Segment Rating: 7/10
This was a great match, and continued to further the competition level of the tag team division in AEW. TH2 haven’t been taken seriously at all since coming to AEW and I think this a great way to give them a great showing even in a loss and make them look good in the process. FTR once again did what they do best, and that’s being a tag team wrestlers. I get excited for every match that they have and it’s obvious that the eventual Young Bucks versus FTR match is going to be one of the biggest tag team matches ever.
AEW TNT Championship – Dog Collar Match: Brodie Lee (c) vs. Cody
This match was so good, for the soul purpose that the entire match told a story. It was hard hitting, it was bloody, and it was exactly what it needed to be. The match saw a lot of use of the chain that was connected to each competitor by the neck. A piledriver through a table which was a great spot busted open which was a very cool looking spot but puzzled me on how that busted open Brodie, my guess is the involvement of the chain in the process of that piledriver. Silver and Reynolds would get involved in the match, Silver was busted open by a punch from Cody and later received a dropkick after Brodie made him sit in a chair. Reynolds appeared during a turning point of the match where Brodie was provoking Arn Anderson at ringside and Reynolds ran in and received a spinebuster from Anderson, which was followed up by Brodie punching Arn. The finish came when Cody wrapped the chain around the face of Brodie and hit continued elbow shots to the face, followed by a cross rhodes for the pin and the win.
After the match Cody would proclaim that he will never turn his back on the fans, and that he plans to defend the title next week on the Dynamite Anniversary show. This brings out Orange Cassidy who follows it up with his usual half hearted thumbs up and Cody responds with a thumbs up of his own, setting up the match for next week.
Segment Rating: 8/10
I absolutely loved everything about this match, Cody did once again what he does best which is tell a story in his matches and that’s why he’s on another level in that aspect. Both men looked great in there did what they came to do in the best way, the chemistry was off the charts. I can’t say enough how much they pulled me in and kept me glued to the screen to see who would be the winner. The loss doesn’t hurt Brodie in the slightest because he proved again he can have a big match and have a stellar performance even in a loss. I look forward to Cody versus Orange Cassidy next week.
Big Swole vs. Serena Deeb
This was a fine match that did what it was supposed to do which is get Swole over. However, you could argue that this match match Deeb look better, because she made the match what it was. The action was hard hitting and back and forth. Swole would get the victory after a combination of strikes, a headbutt, and a rolling elbow for the pin.
Segment Rating: 5/10
There’s not much more to add here, in my opinion the wrong person won, but I guess there’s plans to build up Swole right now and not Deeb. In my opinion Deeb is the superior talent and that’s all I really have to say about that.
Inner Circle (Chris Jericho & Jake Hager) vs. Chaos Project
Before the match, throughout the night Chris Jericho was receiving congratulations for thirty years from numerous legends of wrestling, music and film, the likes of which included his father Ted Irvine, Bully Ray, Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Slash, Dennis Miller, DDP, Eli Roth, Kevin Smith, Ultimo Dragon, Chavo Guerrero, Gabriel Iglesias, Shaq, Don Callis, Lars Ulrich, and possibly the biggest surprise of these names, was NJPW Legend Hiroshi Tanahashi, who has people speculating on a possible looming partnership between NJPW and AEW.
Why this match took place was obvious. They’re celebrating the 30th anniversary of Jericho so he wanted to face his friend for the first time in 24 years. I get it, but this match was just unnecessary. It had it’s moments like all Jericho matches do, it just shouldn’t have been the main event. I think that’s my biggest issue. The majority of the match was Jericho versus Luther, while Serpentico and Hager fought outside. The finish came when Jeircho asked for his bat and Luther caught it and used it, but after a distraction Jericho hit the Judas Effect for the win.
Following the match Jericho and the Inner Circle enter the ring the celebrate, but MJF’s music hits. He wants to be part of the celebration, and he comes out with Wardlow and a person under a blanket. MJF says he has some more presents for Jericho and next week he will have an announcement that he wants Jericho to be present for. MJF reveals the first gift to be a clown, which Jericho is puzzled about, but the clown is holding another gift, which turns out to be a framed photo of MJF. Jericho takes the picture and hits the clown over the head with it and then delivers a Judas Effect. Jericho gets on the mic again says he hates clowns and for MJF to never interrupt him again. They point at each other as to say they are messing with each other then the entire heel roster of AEW comes out to celebrate with Jericho as we get SNL style credits that credit Jericho being in charge of everything.
Segment Rating: 5/10
I didn’t care for this match or the post match segment, both seemed completely unnecessary. Clearly this thing with MJF is leading to some kind of fake out by MJF where he wants to join the Inner Circle to get close to Jericho and the eventual singles match between the two. That’s too obvious not to point out and sure the match will probably be very good, but a lot of these segments that each of these two have done whether it be together or not, have not been good.
Remarkable Wrestler of the Week
For this episode of AEW Dynamite, the Remarkable Wrestler of the Week, is the first repeat recipient, Cody.
It’s impossible not to see the passion Cody has for this, and he proved it in droves in this match again. He pulls you in and gets you invested in what he does no matter what it is. He did that again in this dog collar match and that’s why he’s the RWOW for the second straight week.
Overall
So that’s all the highlights for this episode of AEW Dynamite on October 7th, overall I give this show a 6 out of 10. The first three matches of this show just got better and better, but the show took a dip after the women’s match where in my opinion the wrong person won, and we got the pointless tag team main event with the pointless celebration segment that followed.
