Welcome back to Weekly Spotlight, my weekly segment where I will be looking at the best segment in wrestling this week across all promotions. If you feel there’s a segment that warrants my attention contact me on twitter @cs_rose1 and I’ll let you know what I think of it.
This week’s Weekly Spotlight is shone upon the AEW Women’s Championship match from AEW All out between Thunder Rosa and Hikaru Shida (c) on Saturday night. This beat out the NXT Title match between Adam Cole and Finn Balor and the AEW Tag Team Title match between FTR and the champions, Hangman Adam Page & Kenny Omega.
This is the first time and I’m really pleased that it happened that the Women have headlined the Weekly Spotlight, and it is completely deserved after the impressive performance by these two amazing wrestlers. On a match card where you have to compete with matches like MJF vs Jon Moxley, FTR vs Omega & Page, and Chris Jericho vs Orange Cassidy this is no mean feat by these two women and I believe they were by far and away the best match on the card at All Out on Saturday evening.
This is really the first time a women’s match in AEW has made people stand up and take notice, however, the question needs to be raised of how much of this was due to Thunder Rosa and why has none of the AEW signed talent been able to put on such a high-quality match with their champion. If anything this tells us that AEW should do everything in their power to get a hold of a performer like Thunder Rosa on their books if they are available and bolster their women’s division.
Honourable Mentions
NXT Title – Adam Cole vs Finn Balor
A dominant performance from Finn Balor as he became a two-time NXT Champion as he defeated Adam Cole. A really good match between two of the best in the company at this present time with Balor delivering a top rope 1916 after various near falls back and forth to pick up the win. I believe Finn will keep the title until Karrion Kross is fit and ready to return to a programme with the Prince of NXT. It also free’s Adam Cole up to either move up, challenge for another title or even take a break from TV.
AEW Tag Team Titles – FTR vs Hangman Adam Page & Kenny Omega
Storytelling at its finest with this match and I was all for it. The match was paced perfectly and played on the strength of trust between Hangman and Omega as well as demonstrating the sheer excellence and expertise within tag team wrestling that FTR possesses. I went into the match expecting the titles to change hands however at points during this match they even had me wondering whether the dysfunctional team of Page and Omega were going to be able to pull it off.
The ending to this segment itself was interesting with Omega contemplating the attack on Page but instead leaving him lying in the ring and issuing The Bucks with the ultimatum of leaving with him as he needed a “clean break”. If this is a teaser for Kenny’s cleaner gimmick then I’m all for it, and can’t wait to see what is in store for both men in a single’s capacity going forward.
