On RAW, Brock Lesnar returned to WWE with the Royal Rumble just a few weeks away. With his return and many top stars sidelined with injuries, is 2016 the year for the Beast Incarnate to reign as champion?
Lesnar started 2015 as the WWE World Heavyweight Champion, with this reign hindered by the lack of appearances from the champion due to the limited dates on his contract. With that being said though, any time Lesnar appeared on RAW or any other form of WWE television was proving to be must-see television. Even when he wasn’t the WWE World Heavyweight Champion, the ratings spoke volumes about how much of a must-see star Lesnar was. On the RAW after Wrestlemania 31, which was notable for Lesnar’s rampage after he lost the championship, RAW averaged a huge 5.36 million viewers. This was the most-viewed RAW of the year and the most-viewed since 2012. The RAW ratings are crucial to WWE business so even if the title reign is only a short-term deal, Brock would no doubt be able to get the high numbers for the company.
One of the issues with Brock’s initial title reign was the lack of different challengers he had for the title. He obliterated John Cena at Summerslam for the belt but only escaped with the title in a rematch at Night of Champions after Seth Rollins caused a disqualification. Brock beat Cena and Rollins in an outstanding triple threat match to retain the title at the Royal Rumble before dropping the belt at Wrestlemania during a match with Roman Reigns, where Rollins cashed in Money In The Bank.
A second title reign can give the WWE a chance to learn from their mistakes. The WWE has not choice but to create new stars and the challengers that would go up against Brock would benefit from the exposure from facing Lesnar for the title. I would much rather see the likes of Cesaro, Dean Ambrose and Kevin Owens finally becoming true main eventers by putting on a great match with Lesnar than to see John Cena go up against Lesnar again. Maybe WWE believe that Cena vs Lesnar once again would be more of a draw but it would still be foolish to neglect the opportunity to make new stars by throwing them in the ring with Brock Lesnar.
It’s very baffling to me that WWE currently has a incredible talent pool in its ranks but is still resistant to put this talent on display in the main event scene with these stars. I understand sometimes that you want to put stars up against other already established stars as from a financial standpoint, that’s going to do great for the WWE Network subscriptions and TV ratings. However, there’s more reasons out there to throw Lesnar in the mix with the stars of tomorrow.
Him winning the WWE World Title opens up all sorts of possibilities. Even at times when he’d be away from WWE television, there’s still opportunities for these new stars to shine if booked right. There’s a lot of reasons to have Brock Lesnar be the king of WWE once again.
