Davie’s Dungeon: Is The Role Of General Manager Dead?

Welcome to the dungeon!

This past Monday on Raw, Brad Maddox was fired as the General Manager by The Authority. What I don’t understand though, is why do they need a general manager at this current time when it’s obvious The Authority are running the show?

When Maddox was given the role it seemed perfect for him. He comes across cocky and arrogant and this role could have been perfect for him. Since Stephanie and Triple H became regular characters once again, they have overtook the show and their name ‘The Authority’ clearly states that they are the one who are in charge of the show.

Brad Maddox has gotten lost in the mix since Triple H and Stephanie became The Authority and it’s not because of his ability, it’s simply because they don’t need a general manager for now. I believe the role of the general manager died when Eric Bischoff left the WWE.

Vickie Guerrero has been the only one who has been believable as an authority figure since Bischoff’s departure and no-one can doubt just how good she has been in that role. Now she is supposedly leaving the WWE, the role of general manager has taken another blow.

If the WWE wants to have general managers of Raw and Smackdown then they must make it clear to the audience who is really in charge of the shows. There is no point in having a general manager if The Authority are telling them what decisions they must take.

I think if they want to revive the role then they need Vince McMahon to return. Creative should have him feud with The Authority to take them down when the time is right. It was rumoured that this feud was supposed to happen during the build up to Wrestlemania 30 and I think it’s a shame it didn’t.

Once the Evolution and The Shield feud ends, then the time would be right for Vince to make his long awaited return. The set-up is perfect with Stephanie continuously trying to take down the WWE World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan.

Vince could easily return to take back his company from The Authority, siding with Daniel Bryan. I have wrote about this storyline before but I haven’t thought about how much it could affect the role of the general manager. If Vince was to return and take down The Authority, he could then place someone as the general manager who could do the role justice.

It’s all about the creative team putting faith in someone and letting them have a lengthy run. Sting has been rumoured for the part along with Hulk Hogan but I believe it should be given to someone like Alex Riley or David Otunga.

It’s the perfect opportunity to give a superstar who has been lost in the shuffle a new lease of life. We are never going to see Riley or Otunga as WWE World Heavyweight Champion so why not give them a role where they can make a name for themselves?

Right now, I think Vince returning and having him name a general manager is the only hope left for the role. Triple H and Stephanie aren’t going to be The Authority forever and people will eventually get bored of their routine so it makes sense for the WWE to prepare for the future.

I just hope if they do want to keep the role alive, they do it properly like they did with Eric Bischoff and make it clear that the general manager is the one who is in charge.
