Davie’s Dungeon: The 2014 Royal Rumble

Welcome to the dungeon!

The Royal Rumble is usually one of the most exciting and intriguing shows of the year. Personally, it’s my favourite show because we never really know who’s going to win and we also get some surprise entrants in the Rumble match itself. The Royal Rumble kicks off the road to WrestleMania and it sets up the main-event at the biggest show of the year.

Most years, the Rumble match is unpredictable. We all have our favourites – the ones we want to win – and then we have the superstars who we either expect to win or who we know will definitely win.

Last year’s Rumble match was an example of one of those times when we know who’s going to win. It was inevitable that John Cena was going to be standing tall at the end of it, so it wasn’t as exciting as it should’ve been.

The 2014 Royal Rumble is hard to predict right now because there’s a few superstars who have a good chance of winning. There’s a reason for that. It’s because The Authority angle has linked the storylines together over the past few months, which means that the opponents of The Authority have got to be the favourites – John Cena, Daniel Bryan and CM Punk – but it’s difficult to choose which man has the better chance of winning.

First of all, John Cena has always got to be a favourite, simply because he’s the face of the company. I think that if Vince could have John Cena as the champion until the day he retires, he would. However, as much as John Cena has to be a favourite, I don’t see him winning this year’s Rumble and I hope he doesn’t.

Without a doubt, Daniel Bryan – the superstar of the year – should win. He’s had one of the best years any superstar could wish for. The WWE Universe are completely behind him each and every week on Raw, and he repays us by putting on fantastic matches whenever he’s in the ring.

I still don’t understand why he isn’t the champion right now. Maybe it’s a good thing that the WWE seem to be waiting to give him a lengthy run as champion, because he seems to be getting over with the fans more and more as time goes on.

For me, the perfect ending to WrestleMania 30 would be seeing Daniel Bryan standing in the middle of the ring – closing the show – holding the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. He truly deserves it more than anyone in the WWE right now. Daniel Bryan should win, but I don’t think he will.

My pick for the winner of the 2014 Royal Rumble is CM Punk. It looks as though CM Punk is going to be feuding with The Authority and even though I still think we could see CM Punk against HHH at ‘Mania, I expect him to be challenging Randy Orton for the championship. If we get the rumoured Vince/HHH feud that’s been talked about for the last few months, HHH would be in Orton’s corner while Vince would be in Punk’s.

I wouldn’t complain about CM Punk winning the Royal Rumble because, along with Daniel Bryan, I think he deserves it. Punk has been a consistent performer for the WWE and even though he was the longest-reigning champion of the modern era, I still think there’s more to come from him and he deserves that defining WrestleMania moment.

The 2014 Royal Rumble is going to be one of the most interesting PPV’s we’ve seen in a very long time. We’ll also hopefully see some surprise entrants from the past, as we normally do, just for nostalgia. As long as CM Punk or Daniel Bryan are victorious, I’ll be satisfied and I’ll sit back to enjoy the road to WrestleMania!
