Welcome to the dungeon!
This Sunday, Daniel Bryan will defend his newly won WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Extreme Rules against Kane. The build-up to this match has been as good as can be despite the circumstances Daniel Bryan has had to deal with in his personal life, which has led to him taking time off.
Kane has reverted back to his demon character which I think he should have stayed with throughout his entire career. I didn’t enjoy the corporate Kane and I’ve never enjoyed watching him without his mask. He has been through so many different forms of the character over the years but he always seems to be at his best when he is the Devil’s favourite demon.
I can’t help thinking though, that the Kane character has ran its course.
When he debuted at Badd Blood in 1997, he was seen as an unstoppable force. He was able to match the dominance of The Undertaker and he was seen as indestructible. Over the years his character has had to change with the times, just as any other character has to. (Take a hint John Cena).
It’s been nearly 17 years since the character debuted and Kane is still as good in the ring now as he was back then – if not better. However, I just can’t believe that he is a main-event player anymore. Anyone with a brain knows he isn’t going to win the championship at Extreme Rules as this is just a filler feud.
It isn’t going to damage Daniel Bryan as the champion but I don’t expect to see this as the main-event as that honour looks like it’s going to go to Evolution and The Shield.
I hope the WWE doesn’t make the same mistake with Daniel Bryan as they did with CM Punk when he was champion and not have his matches end future PPV’s. CM Punk had the longest reign as champion in the modern era but the majority of his title defences were dealt a blow as the WWE always seemed to stick with John Cena closing PPV’s.
Daniel Bryan versus Kane should be a good match but the fact that everyone knows who is going to win just devalues the importance of the bout. At this stage in his career, Kane should not be challenging for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. He should be feuding with new and upcoming stars to help get them established.
This isn’t a knock against Kane as I believe he is entertaining and good in the ring but it’s safe to say he will never win the championship again in his career. The character is past its sell-by-date and I think he would be better used as a special attraction or behind the scenes to train the young stars.
The character has had too many transformations to make us believe that he is unstoppable again. I personally think removing his mask the first time ruined the character and then to make him become a comedy character just destroyed any credit the Big Red Monster had.
I will say though that the comedy sketches with Kane, Daniel Bryan and Dr Shelby were some of the most entertaining moments ever seen on Raw. However, does the WWE really expect us to believe that Kane is now a monster for what seems like the millionth time?
Unless Kane is feuding with a mid-card talent to help them get over with the crowd, then I don’t really want to see him – especially not challenging for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
