Welcome to the dungeon!
Summerslam 2014 is now in the history books and it may be remembered as the dawning of a new era in the WWE.
From start to finish, Summerslam lived up to the hype of the biggest show of the summer. It had everything a WWE PPV should have, something for every fan to enjoy no matter if you prefer the in-ring action or the entertainment side of the show.
Starting the PPV with a couple of title changes was the perfect way to get the crowd hyped up and it was about time that Dolph Ziggler finally got his hands on gold which actually means something. I know the IC Title doesn’t mean as much as it used to but it’s still a step in the right direction for the talented superstar.
I didn’t expect The Miz to lose the title especially when he has finally been given a character change that he can actually do something with. No one can deny that The Miz is great when he is a cocky, annoying heel. Hopefully the WWE will keep working on The Miz’s character and develop it over time and also use Dolph’s win to propel him to the next level.
I was very surprised to see Paige regain the Divas Championship, something I felt was a bit rushed. I would have had AJ Lee retain the title and have Paige keep coming back for more and torment AJ with the storyline culminating at the Royal Rumble. This way the WWE could have built up another diva ready to challenge for the title or even be involved in the storyline.
One thing that stood out for me was Stephanie McMahon and Brie Bella. They worked a good match and done everything they needed to do. Stephanie looked better in the ring than she ever has done. The Nikki Bella heel turn seemed to be known about by just about everyone so even though it was predictable, it was the right thing to do. I hope the Bella’s/Daniel Bryan and The Authority will keep feuding, even leading up to next year’s Wrestlemania.
Bray Wyatt, Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns once again showed why they are the future of the WWE. It seems every week/month that goes by and every PPV they are involved with, they seem to take the chances they are given to shine and prove themselves. In a year or two, these four men are the only superstars that we are going to be talking about week in and week out, more so than what we already are.
For me, the main-event was perfect from bell to bell. The WWE have built up Brock Lesnar as an unstoppable monster so they had no choice but to have him with the championship. It wasn’t surprising that Lesnar won the championship but I think it was surprising to see the WWE’s golden boy be allowed to take such a beating.
John Cena deserves credit for taking suplex after suplex, especially the sickening one where he landed on his head. Lesnar is the perfect heel for the WWE to have as a champion and they are now going to have to build up someone to be a credible, strong contender for the title. We all know the WWE is pre-determined but I feel that Brock Lesnar gives the WWE World Heavyweight Championship the credibility that it deserves.
Summerslam was a show where the younger and newer stars took full advantage of the time they were given. The WWE is in a healthy position to grow over the next few years and let’s hope they take advantage of the talent at their disposal.
