Here at SLTD Wrestling, we aim to please, and deliver coverage on some of the most intriguing topics in the wrestling industry. Recently, fans have been drooling at the (however improbable) prospect of Kevin Owens squaring off against Brock Lesnar at some stage in the future. There’s no evidence to support that this match is in the works or that it will ever happen, but the fact that so many people seem to be talking about it means it’s worth discussing right here, on Fantasy Fight Friday!
In case you’re unfamiliar with the concept, this column focuses on the what-ifs, never-weres and could’ve-beens of the wrestling industry. We take some of the biggest dream matches, whether they can or cannot happen at some time in the future, and put them to the test, not only giving our own opinions on the outcome of the match (usually without looking at context, as if it was purely based on the talents’ ability in the ring), but letting your voice be heard by letting you vote for a winner down below in the poll and in the comments section. Let’s get right to it!
In one corner, you have the Beast Incarnate, Brock Lesnar. He is a four-time WWE World Heavyweight Champion, a former UFC Heavyweight Champion, an NCAA Division I Heavyweight Champion and a former IWGP Heavyweight Champion. This man hasn’t been pinned in the WWE since the Spring of 2013.
He makes it a point to dismantle his opponents when he steps in the ring, with suplex after suplex, completely destroying the likes of Cena, Triple H, The Undertaker, Roman Reigns, Mark Henry, Big Show and Seth Rollins in the last few years alone. As the emperor of Suplex City, he is arguably the biggest attraction in the WWE today, and it looks like he has no intention of stopping, especially with the ingenious mind of Paul Heyman by his side.
In the other corner, we have the incomparable Kevin Owens. Despite not having Vinnie Mac’s sought-after chiselled physique that guys like Lesnar and Cena sport, Kevin Owens is an incredibly agile and powerful competitor and can go toe-to-toe with just about anyone. Whether he’s competing in spectacular technical wrestling matches or displaying his power against larger individuals, Owens is one of the most talented, charismatic men in the WWE today.
With well over a decade of experience wrestling on the independent scene and in companies like Ring of Honor, the man formerly known as Kevin Steen has perfected his craft and is a true veteran of the art form. It’s no surprise that he won the NXT Championship merely two months after debuting on the brand, and even one-upped himself by defeating John Cena in one hell of a debut match at this year’s Elimination Chamber Pay-Per-View.
SLTD Wrestling’s own Adam O’Brien, the author of ‘Under the Spotlight’, gave his thoughts on the match below:
“One thing I know for sure is that this would be brutal. These guys would absolutely tear each other apart, and I don’t say that lightly. I think both men would feel like they had something to prove, and so the intensity of the match would increase dramatically with the added pressure to deliver.
Owens would definitely head into this match under pressure to live up to expectations and/or silence any doubters, and so he would leave it all in the ring, be it blood, sweat or tears. Lesnar would try to toy with Owens towards the start of the match, but I’d imagine he’d get proper pissed off when he realised that conquering Kevin Owens would be no easy task. So each man would up the ante and there would indeed be bloodshed.
As for a winner, this is such a tough one to call, and while it seems somewhat blasphemous to bet against The BEAST, Brock Lesnar, I think Kevin Owens could pull off the victory. The guy has an ever-expanding arsenal of manoeuvres, including aerial assaults, submissions and Lesnar’s go-to, suplexes.
He’s got one of the most innovative movesets on the roster and I think he’d be able to improvise something to combat Lesnar’s sheer size, speed and strength, to win with an emphatic pop-up powerbomb from the top rope.”
