Have you ever wondered what would happen if ‘The Immortal’ Hulk Hogan ever crossed paths with John Cena? How about if ‘Rowdy’ Roddy Piper ever went toe-to-toe with Dean Ambrose? Who would have prevailed if ‘The Heartbreak Kid’, Shawn Michaels ever went one-on-one with ‘The Great One’, The Rock?
Welcome, everybody, to a brand new column here at SLTD Wrestling, where we take two or more of the biggest stars from the past, present and future of professional wrestling, pit them against each other and call the action!
Dream matches have always been an institution amongst the wrestling community; people want to know what would happen if two icons from different eras were to square off in the middle of the ring. At SLTD, we aim not only to provide an insight into some of the most intriguing fantasy match-ups in history, but we encourage you, yes you, to join the fun both by voting for the competitor you would expect to win, and by leaving your comments below, where you can give us your reasons for voting for each star.
And what better way to start off this new column, then by putting two of the greatest wrestlers in history against each other in a battle we’ve been chomping at the bit to see for years, CM Punk vs. ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin? This match may never take place, but if it did, who do you think would come out on top? Let’s run through the facts.
In one corner, you have Steve Austin, a beer-drinking, mudhole-stomping, born-and-bred Texan who doesn’t take orders from anybody, and knows he could whip your ass at a moment’s notice if you got in his way. He was one of few men to stand up to the authority figures, flip ‘em the bird and stun their whole family in his efforts to prove himself as the greatest SOB to set foot in the squared circle.
In the other corner, you have CM Punk, a straight-edged individual who only got his high, at least at the time, from professional wrestling. He knew he was great, you don’t earn a nickname like ‘Best in the World’ by selling yourself short after all, but he never became complacent. He always aimed to improve and wouldn’t be happy until he found himself in the main event at WrestleMania.
With his jaw-dropping pipebombs and unbelievable mic skills, there are many people who believe Punk would have thrived in the Attitude Era, which is what makes this dream match so mouth-watering.
These two individuals are arguably the biggest badasses of their respective eras, they each believe themselves to be the best of all time and they back it up with two of the most extraordinary careers in wrestling history, despite both being unfortunately cut short.
The question on SLTD Wrestling’s mind today is this: If Punk had been around back in the late 90’s, would he have been the man to silence the ‘Texas Rattlesnake’? Or would his pipebombs backfire, and leave him stunned, both literally and figuratively, by ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin?
SLTD Wrestling’s own Adam O’Brien gives his take on the dream match below;
“I think this would be one of the greatest matches ever to grace the WWE, whether it happened in the Attitude Era or if it happened at WrestleMania next year. These two would tear the house down, and it’s a shame that this, one of few dream matches that could still have happened in the last few years, may never take place now.
Whether that’s down to Austin not wanting to lace up his boots again or CM Punk seemingly being finished with WWE altogether, it’s highly unlikely that these two men will ever lock up in a WWE ring. Ever since we saw Punk and Austin lock eyes backstage during Punk’s ‘New Nexus’ days, we as fans have been drooling at the thought of these two squaring off.
As for who would win, this is a really tough one to call. Steve Austin is one of very few wrestlers whose name is easily recognisable to wrestling fans and non-wrestling fans throughout the world, up there with the likes of Hulk Hogan and The Rock. So I would imagine Austin would be the most popular vote.
However, I truly believe that CM Punk, under different circumstances, could have achieved just as much success in the future. After all, Punk has achieved things that Austin hasn’t, becoming a two-time Mr. Money in the Bank for starters, successfully cashing in on both counts. CM Punk is also one of only seven men to hold the WWE Championship for a straight year, capping it off at 434 days when he lost to The Rock at the 2013 Royal Rumble. You won’t find Austin’s name on that list.
These guys are both incredibly tough, hard-hitting men, but I think CM Punk may have the edge in this one. He has an aerial arsenal to his advantage, and I feel like he would have a lot more to prove by beating the ‘Texas Rattlesnake’. I think he’d use that to gain the momentum required to put Austin away with an emphatic GTS.”
So who do you think would win in an epic clash between the ‘Bionic Redneck’, Steve Austin and the ‘Second City Saint’, CM Punk? Leave your vote here, and we encourage you to join the discussion by commenting below, to tell us why your chosen star would win the match!
