I watch a lot of wrestling, and when I say a lot, I mean a LOT of wrestling.
Since May of last year I’ve been watching every bit of wrestling content on the WWE Network starting with “Old School” from March 17th of 1975, all the way to episode 100 of Monday Night Raw from February 27th of 1995 and I’m still going.
During that time I’ve also managed to keep up with all the major United States promotions, Lucha Underground, Ring of Honor, TNA and WWE. I watch EACH one EVERY week.
When you watch or follow professional wrestling closely, you see a ton of people come and go. You see talented individuals that fail to connect with the fans. Often times the gimmick just doesn’t quite fit the wrestler, and other times the wrestler just doesn’t quite fit the gimmick. But every once in a while there’s a man or woman that pulls back the curtain, takes that first step out, and everyone immediately knows that they’re watching a superstar in the making.
For me, Ring of Honor’s “The Peacock” Dalton Castle, is that man.
Describing the brilliance of “The Peacock” is no easy task, and it’s something that you have to witness for yourself in order to truly comprehend. He’s the “real deal”, as they say, and Ring of Honor has landed themselves a star.
His entrance is perfectly flamboyant, complete with his two manservants that he lovingly refers to as “his boys”. They drop to their hands and knees outside the ring and he uses them as steps to reach the apron. They serve as lounge chairs if he needs a place to rest while cutting a promo. They even strip him down to his ring attire before every match (yes it’s a little creepy, but it totally works).
On the mic he’s got a comedic delivery similar to Jack Black, and at times reminds me of the late great Andy Kaufman. His comedy seems to flow naturally and never feels prefabricated or forced as is often the case in the WWE’s comedic spots and routines.
With all that being said, the most important question, as always, is “Can he wrestle?”
The answer- ABSOLUTELY.
Just pull up last week’s episode of Ring of Honor and see for yourself. Dalton Castle went to war with the ring veteran Jushin Thunder Liger and completely held his own. Castle lost the match but clearly won the respect of the fans and Liger himself.
I’m no psychic nor am I some great prognosticator, but I see a bright future in store for “The Peacock”.
If you haven’t been paying attention, now is the time to start. This man is a performer, an entertainer, and mostly importantly… he’s a wrestler. He’s must-watch television and trust me, you don’t want to miss it.
‘Cause StunSeed said so.
