So I think it’s safe to say that we all knew that Finn Balor would win the NXT championship in Tokyo, right? After the three part glimpse into his life and background on the weekly episodes of NXT, having the match in Japan where he built his career as “Prince Devitt”, along with Kevin Owens’ recent main roster success, all signs pointed to a Balor victory. But at what cost?
Sure Balor is a phenomenal in-ring performer, and his “demon” entrances at live events are entertaining, but can he work a feud as strongly as Kevin Owens. His promos and mic work still leave a lot to be desired and with Owens seemingly out of the picture, drawing interest in NXT every week just got a lot harder.
I’m not saying that Finn Balor shouldn’t have eventually gotten the strap. I’m only saying that he shouldn’t have gotten it, right now. Hideo Itami, the potential best storyline opponent for Balor, is reportedly out until later this year. Kevin Owens can make any feud interesting, but it looks like he’s been called up to the main roster full time.
Outside of a Samoa Joe heel-turn, I personally have zero interest in any other potential feuds for Finn Balor.
I understand that NXT is a developmental league, but as a fan of the brand I was hoping to see a longer Owens reign. Owens’s heel work made every match meaningful. At this point, I don’t see Finn Balor bringing the same thing to the table.
Balor’s money between the ropes, but right now, he needs someone else to build the anticipation for his matches. In the WWE, personality is arguably more important than in-ring abilities…. And outside of his entrance, Finn Balor has close to zero personality.
