Now… before we get fully into this I just want to say that this is my own opinions and you may not agree. If you don’t then make sure to comment down below which era you think is the best
Is today’s era truly the best when it comes to talent? Let’s break it down:
In the Golden Era(80’s) there were 2 main superstars everybody wanted to see, which were Hulk Hogan and Ultimate Warrior. Now don’t get me wrong, nothing wrong with these superstars as they put on a good show, but is it worth watching a 2 hour product just to see either Hulk Hogan or/and the Ultimate Warrior? In my eyes, no. Talent is a HUGE part of a show, but there’s more to it, and you’ll see what I’m on about later on in the article.
In the New Generation era(1993-1997) WWE, or as it was known at the time WWF flagship show was truly born, Monday… Night… RAW. On the first episode of RAW on 11th January, 1993, you had some of the biggest superstars of all time including The Undertaker, Bam Name Bigelow, Shawn Michaels and many more. You could argue that the talent in this era was truly the best, and I get your point if you say that.
Let’s go to many wrestling fans favourite era, the Attitude Era(1997-2002). The Attitude Era truly changed wrestling forever, with many people’s favorite superstars such as Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock and you could even say Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker in this era too. Now, the Attitude Era changed EVERYTHING in wrestling… and with the Monday Night Wars going on with WCW which made things real interesting… I’m going to say that this was the best era for the talent wise of things in the WWE.
Then we get to where the name changed to WWE, SmackDown was introduced by this point and the first ever WWE Draft took place in 2002, also known as the Ruthless aggression era(2002-2008). They had developmental stars in 2002 such as Brock Lesnar, John Cena and Batista… now look at those 3 superstars and the things they’ve done in the company. also, ECW made its return during the Ruthless Aggression era… and things were going great! Brock Lesnar became WWE Champion by defeating The Rock, and Randy Orton became the youngest World Heavyweight Champion in history in 2003. It was a great era to be personally growing up with in the wrestling world. The talent was great too, you had the likes of The Rock, Batista, John Cena, Shelton Benjamin(who is VERY underrated IMO) and many more talents who have proved themselves in the ring.
Let’s go into the current era, the PG/Reality era(2008-2016) now ECW wasn’t doing as well, and is no longer a thing. But let’s concentrate on 2016 mostly as that’s what’s happening right now… WWE have proved that you don’t need John Cena chucked down our throats and can put on entertaining matches with one of the best in the world, AJ Styles. In today’s era, you need mic skills… just look at Enzo Amore! He oozes with charisma. And you need talent, for example, Kevin Owens, Seth Rollins, Finn Balor… the list goes on and on! Even NXT, that basically replaced OVW.. which then got turned into WWE’s 3rd Brand and have some of the best wrestlers in the world including Samoa Joe, Shinsuke Nakamura, BOBBY Roode(it’s so Glorious) and don’t forget the Fiesta that No Way Jose brings! The talent nowadays is beyond me.
So let’s put the eras into order of talent:
1. Current era
2. Attitude Era
3. Ruthless Aggression Era
4. New Generation Era
5. Golden Era
