Hello, and welcome to my preview and predictions for Genesis – week 2.
Genesis continues this week and after last week’s action, this seems certain to be an unmissable episode. The landscape of TNA could change and the stakes have been raised in some of the matches we’ll see this week.
Here’s a rundown of the matches we’ll see on the latest episode of Impact:
X-Division Championship Match (with Velvet Sky in a cage at ringside): Austin Aries vs Chris Sabin (c)
James Storm vs Gunner (with Gunner’s World Championship shot on the line)
Steel Cage Match: Kurt Angle vs Bobby Roode
Career vs Title Match: Sting vs Magnus (c)
Let’s breakdown the matches and what’s led to them before I give you my predictions.
X-Division Championship Match (with Velvet Sky in a cage at ringside): Austin Aries vs Chris Sabin (c)
Build: Sabin’s used Velvet as a distraction over the last few weeks, resulting in him winning the X-Division Championship back from Aries.
Last week, Aries told Velvet Sky she was worth more and should be treated better by Chris Sabin. Sabin took Sky to the ring, where they aired their issues. Aries challenged Sabin to a title match, with the added stipulation the Velvet couldn’t interfere. Sabin refused at first, but Velvet didn’t have a problem with it. Velvet went on to tell Sabin that if he lost, she’d find someone else to spend her time with.
Thoughts: Sabin has it all to lose here – not only his X-Division Championship, but possibly his girlfriend too! It’ll be a good match and both men will up their game because there’s a lot at stake. Can Aries bring Sabin’s world crashing down and leave him with nothing after Genesis? Would Aries have lost the X-Division Championship in the first place if Velvet hadn’t interfered?
Prediction: Austin Aries becomes the NEW TNA X-Division Champion
James Storm vs Gunner – (with Gunner’s World Championship shot on the line)
Build: In the Feast or Fired match a few weeks ago, Gunner literally stepped over his (then) tag-team partner to get the briefcase. The risk paid off for him and Gunner earned a future shot at the World Heavyweight Championship.
After James Storm saw the footage from the match, he realised that his partner had taken away his shot at the World Championship and since then, they’ve been arguing with each other, which led James Storm to challenge Gunner to this match with the title shot on the line.
Thoughts: This feud has been interesting. We’ve seen Gunner’s ruthless side come out, stepping over his partner to get the briefcase. James Storm has been unlucky with his tag-team partners. They always seem to screw him over in the end. There’s no doubt that this will be a heavy-hitting affair that’s full of action.
Will they still be partners after the dust has settled? I’d say probably not. After all, they’ve had their run with the tag belts and it looks like TNA are going to rebuild that division, so there’s not much point.
Prediction: Gunner
Steel Cage Match: Kurt Angle vs Bobby Roode
Build: Their feud has been rumbling on for a couple of months. Roode has shown that he’s got Kurt’s number. He’s got the upper hand going into this match, but don’t count Angle out. After all, he’s the Cyborg/wrestling machine.
However, since returning before Bound for Glory, Kurt hasn’t really had that killer edge. Roode’s got inside his head after winning their 2/3 falls match and Kurt’s realising that he needs to think like Roode. Will that be enough to beat “the IT Factor”, or will Angle fall short again?
Thoughts: This match will tear the house down. Their previous matches in steel cages (either against each other, or other people) have always been ones to watch. I hope this will be another classic that goes down in TNA history. Angle will up his game and show why he’s the Cyborg/wrestling machine, and also why he should be in TNA’s Hall of Fame.
Prediction: Kurt Angle
Career vs Title Match: Sting vs Magnus (c)
Build: Sting is putting it all on the line for one last shot at the World Championship, and it’s coming at a huge cost – he could end up without a contract. It would also mean that Dixie’s got rid of everyone who’s opposed to the way she’s running things.
This has been building since their last match where Magnus was disrespectful to Sting as the Icon tried to make him a main-event player. Magnus won and, not long after that, when Dixie set up the World Championship tournament to find “her” champion, Magnus finally captured the gold. Has Sting still got it? Will he show Magnus that it’s Showtime and walk away with his job secure, as well as the World Championship?
Thoughts: This has been building slowly, but after what happened last year at Slammiversary, I didn’t think we’d ever see Sting compete for the World Championship again. However, with Sting’s contract expiring shortly, it seems like the perfect time to write him into a huge storyline or write him out for a while. I like Magnus though and it’d do TNA a lot of good if they come on their UK tour with Magnus as their World Champion.
Prediction: Magnus RETAINS the TNA World Heavyweight Championship
