We all perceive SummerSlam to be THE event of the Summer, but what if I told you that was wrong? GFW have a chance to showcase their best and outclass Vince McMahon’s ‘Sports Entertainment’ behemoth.
Disclaimer: Dear Vince McMahon and Jeff Jarrett, please don’t see this a reason not to hire me in the future…
(Note: I will be referring to the GFW Impact Wrestling as both GFW and TNA throughout this article.)
Better Women’s Match
It’s no secret that TNA was putting on amazing women’s wrestling matches long before WWE’s women’s revolution. Sure, much like WWE until circa 2013 there was a period where TNA treated their ‘Knockouts’ (women’s division wrestlers) as sex symbols. However one of the women competing at Destination X, Gail Kim, is part of the group responsible for changing that.
The match for the ‘Unified GFW Knockouts Championship’ pits the recently ‘unretired’ Gail Kim, against Sienna, who is a damn strong wrestler, I see shades of Beth Phonix in her. Although this match has taken place in the past, the battles these two have gone through have been hard hitting and intense. Furthermore, unlike WWE, TNA isn’t afraid to let the ladies go out there and put it all on the line, much like the men. WWE is slowly starting to reach that stage, but TNA will always have that over the WWE.
WWE’s women’s matches at SummerSlam don’t fresh and exciting. RAW’s women’s match gets a bit of a pass, plans were changed due to Bayley’s injury. However WWE had the opportunity to do something new, give new talent a go, but they stuck to the norm and are going to go with either Banks or Jax to face Bliss. The case with SD Live’s women match is that there’s not really been much build. There’s no real intensity between Natalya and Naomi, the match just feels like filler until Carmella cashes in her MiTB contract.
GFW however in a very short segment was able to light a fire and instantly give the fans an amazing Knockouts match to look forward to. WWE watch out (or use this as a chance to scout more talent to poach. Your choice).
Potential Wedding
What is one of the most memorable moments in SummerSlam history? That’s right Miss Elizabeth and Randy Savage’s wedding, it was beautiful, sweet and feature my man Mean Gene. WWE had an amazing opportunity to draw mainstream attention by having another wedding at SummerSlam, John Cena and Nikki Bella’s. But they missed the trick.
On the other-hand, TNA has been building a rather funny comedy storyline, surrounding Grado trying to marry Laurel Van Ness (Chelsea Green) in hopes to get a green card. Unfortunately, he’s been constantly thwarted by Kongo Kong.
Hopefully, at Destination X we’ll see a blow off to this and finally get a beautiful (in a weird, immigration tricking way) wedding, which not only will push Grado but will give Laurel Van Ness a chance to finally lose this crazy jilted bride gimmick.
I’m hoping GFW give it the full-monty; streamers, brides maids, Jeff Jarrett performing an acoustic version of ‘Here Comes the Bride’ and paying all their wrestlers.
Bobby Lashley squashes Matt Sydal
I loved Matt Sydal (Evan Bourne) as much as the next guy in WWE. But after the most recent episode of GFW, I’m looking forward to seeing Bobby Lashley absolutely destroy Sydal in their No. 1 Contenders match. I’m not advocating TNA squash their talent, but Bobby Lashley is such a dominant force it won’t hurt Sydal that much.
WWE, unfortunately, are in a position where all of their superstars are on such a thin line between being main event talent, mid-card and jobbers. The likes of Sami Zayn and Dean Ambrose come to mind. If any of WWE’s wrestlers were to lose in spectacular fashion to a superstar that isn’t Brock Lesnar or Goldberg, said wrestler would be eternally buried.
GFW has a chance to make a huge star (once again) of Bobby Lashley, who as his MMA career grows in the spotlight, will grow their name in the media spotlight. GFW could use him as a springboard to get themselves into the mainstream. Much like WWE did with Hulk Hogan, The Rock and John Cena.
WWE is struggling at the moment to find their next a ‘cross over star’ and unlike GFW at Destination X, it’s unlikely that SummerSlam will help them in that pursuit.
X Division Ladder Match
The X Division isn’t exactly the equivalent of the Cruiserwight title. It’s like a middle ground between the Cruiserweights and the Mid-card titles. However, for the purpose of this article, we’ll say the X Division and Cruiserweight title are on the same level.
Unlike the way, the WWE is treating the Cruiserweight Title as a ‘pre-show’ title. GFW is treating the X Division Title as a huge deal. Giving it a stipulation match and being treated as a stepping-stone towards reaching the World Heavyweight Title.
GFW can use the X Division Title ladder match as a way to attract new viewers to their product. By doing this, they can rebuild their company using workhorses much like WWE in the early 90s. This would gain them a reputation amongst ‘hardcore wrestling fans’ which is a demographic WWE struggle to hold on to.
Having a great X Division match at Destination X would give GFW a means to claim the event was better than SummerSlam. As they are giving a wider range of wrestlers a chance to shine. Unlike WWE who seem to be pushing the same talent, again and again.
