Hello I’m back! The Wrestling Brain is here, reasonably tired after staying up all night to watch both NXT Takeover and SummerSlam. I’ve decided to change my mind over my article this week, after two really strong PPVs over the weekend, I have decided to pick my 7 highlights over the weekend, but also the 6 lowlights. Watch out, for number 7 of the highlights shows my heel alter ego.
Highlights
1) Bayley vs Sasha Banks – Sasha will feature in both highlights and lowlights, but to start of with the positives, on Saturday night at NXT Takeover, we were graced to one of the best women’s matches ever in WWE history, as Bayley defeated Sasha Banks for the NXT Women’s championship. If you haven’t watched the Takeover special yet, please watch it because it was awesome again. Bayley had competed in three great Women’s matches on NXT in previous weeks but this match was simply amazing. It’s not the Divas revolution, it’s the Women’s revolution, it started in NXT and it’s down there.
2) Finn defends his title – Cheap plug for one of my previous articles here I’m but very happy that Finn Bálor defended his title this Saturday at NXT Takeover, in another great match against Kevin Owens. Bálor and Owens had a good match in Tokyo, but a great match at Brooklyn. Bálor needed to defend the title to become a top star in NXT, but also to allow Kevin Owens to fully focus on the main roster.
3) Celebrities used well – The two main celebrities at SummerSlam were Arrow star Stephen Amell and former Daily Show host Jon Stewart. Both guys seem to be passionate about business, which of course is needed to appear at a WWE PPV. Amell featured in a match alongside Neville in defeating Stardust and King Barrett, which wasn’t the worst match at PPV, and it was much better than I expected.
Jon Stewart featured 4 times at the PPV, the opening segment, a segment featuring Amell and Neville, interviewing Paul Heyman, but most importantly costing John Cena the WWE Title, as he ran down with a steel chair and teased hitting his enemy Rollins with it but instead he hit Cena and Seth hit a Pedigree onto the steel chair for the victory. Both celebrities were very good, especially Jon Stewart as he knows the business well and he knows the future which is Seth Rollins.
4) Kevin Owens wrestles twice – He didn’t just wrestle twice, he wrestled two miraculous matches, he proved in two nights why he is the future of the WWE along with many other stars, hopefully both matches show why Owens is a top star and will get a push again.
5) Apollo Crews – As I wrote in my preview for NXT I said I didn’t know a lot about Apollo Crews, well I do now. He impressed in his debut, he showed lots of promise and for a big man he brings loads to the table, a high flying powerhouse technician is probably a good way to describe him. His match against Tye Dillinger was good, Dillinger showed why he is a good heel despite his status on the card. Crews came back towards the end of the match to win with his finisher, the Gorilla Press then a Standing Moonsault for the win.
6) Undertaker’s revenge – Despite the screwy finish which will appear later, Undertaker got his revenge over Brock Lesnar, which was the main part of storyline, so it told the story, which a WWE match is supposed to do. I myself am happy that Undertaker won, because I’m and always will be a fan of Undertaker,so I’m vey happy that Taker won.
7) Seth Rollins wins – I was chuffed when firstly Jon Stewart hit Cena with the steel chair, then Rollins hit a pedigree to win the U.S. Title and retain the WWE World Heavyweight Title, which I’m happy about, because Seth needed that win more than Cena. Yes I’m upset that the U.S. Open Challenge is over, but I’m happy that Seth won as he stays champion for now and he hopefully for some time.
Lowlights
1) Why did Jushin “Thunder” Liger and Samoa Joe need to win – You guys can answer this, I’m still frustrated over both results. Liger will probably be never seen again in a WWE ring, so Tyler Breeze should have won,to keep up his winning streak. Speaking of winning streaks, Baron Corbin had to win again against Joe, because of his heel run and by passing out makes him look weak as well. Corbin had to win with a brutal end of days onto Joe.
2) How Bad are Team B.A.D – 5 minutes Team B.A.D lasted in that match and that was mainly Tamina, seriously if Sasha Banks was hurt or injured following her match, why not pull her from the match completely. Seriously this Divas revolution is now failing because Sasha Banks is in the wrong team, as seen on Takeover. Sasha celebrated with Bayley, Lynch and Charlotte, so why don’t Becky and Charlotte drop Paige and bring in Sasha and Bayley, thus making the Four Horsewomen the most dominate team in WWE.
3) No surprise appearances – Apart from Mick Foley which was fun, but before SummerSlam there was all talk of Sting,Kane and Rock appearing and why not if they wanted to make it like Wrestlemania in my eyes they didn’t achieve it. Wrestlemania is where surprises happen, so surely SummerSlam should do it as well. It was supposed to be a 4 hour spectacular but it lasted 3 hours 40 minutes, so why couldn’t The Authority cut a heel promo only to be interfered by The Rock, the promo could of lasted 10/15 minutes then we have the 4 hour spectacular.
4) Why unify the titles – So Seth Rollins is the WWE US World Heavyweight Champion, okay I’m confused that is stupid, why WWE have unified the two main titles goes beyond me. I was annoyed when they unified both the world title and the WWE title but now I’m very annoyed, there must be a reason why WWE have done this but I just can’t understand it.
5) Did Taker tap – Well yes,of course he did, why WWE don’t use a video ref also goes beyond me. So many screwy and stupid decisions occur in WWE these days that involve referees decisions, I know it’s scripted and what happens is predetermined, but it left the WWE universe unhappy across Twitter and Facebook. It was a dumb finish to end an alright match.
6) Not even a cash-in tease – I honestly thought that Sheamus would tease a cash-in at least at SummerSlam but he didn’t, what’s the point of the Money in the bank contract anyway now, Sheamus should have teased a cash-in. Would he have teased a cash in if Cena had won, I would presume so as Cena’s a face and Sheamus is a heel, but what stopped him a few weeks ago when he was about to cash in on Rollins. But I have got the result that I wanted because Seth is the champion and Sheamus didn’t cash in.
That’s all folks from The Wrestling Brain there are few more highlights and lowlights I could include but these are the ones that spring to mind when I think about the SummerSlam weekend. I hope everyone enjoyed SummerSlam and NXT Takeover, and you all did well in the predictions league like me, I believe I got 9/10 matches correct. Enjoy Raw tonight, I won’t be staying up at all tonight, but please follow @SLTDWrestling for many more articles from a selection of great writers. Follow me @callumowen98.
