Honoring The Macho Man

This past weekend marked the 5th anniversary of the passing of Randy “Macho Man” Savage. A WWE Hall of Famer and the man who is largely recognized as being in the greatest wrestling match of all-time with Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat at WrestleMania 3. Normally, this column wouldn’t be meant to talk about negatives in wrestling or the past, but there is a possible future event that could happen posthumously for the Macho Man.

Randy Savage was born Randy Poffo on November 15th, 1952 in Columbus, Ohio, which happens to be my hometown. He spent up until his high school years in Ohio, but is not really known as a “native son”. But Joe Chapman is looking to get the Macho Man honored with a statue in downtown Columbus. He has put up a petition at Change.org, which there will be a link at the bottom of the column, that has gotten over 5,000 signatures so far. We already have 3 statues dedicated to icons of the world, but they all have their flaws. Christopher Columbus might have discovered America by accident, but he did treat Native Americans pretty poorly. Woody Hayes was one of the greatest college football coaches of all-time, but his tenure ended when he punched an opposing player in the face. And Arnold Schwarzanegger, yes he has a statue in Columbus, brings millions of dollars to the area due to the Arnold Classic, but that whole thing about him knocking up his maid is a bit of a black eye.

If Savage gets a statue that means Columbus will have statues of 2 WWE Hall of Famers! What non-affiliated WWE city could boast that! So please if you are a fan of the Macho Man or just a fan of my hometown in general, although I’m guessing you aren’t, please sign Joe Chapman’s petition at the bottom and let’s get Macho Man a statue!
