According to Ringside News recently, WWE is contemplating the establishment of an NXT in the Great White North, particularly in one area of suburban Toronto that has seen a strong following for independent professional wrestling as of late.
Since I also write local news for this specific community just outside Toronto, you can read up on my thoughts here about the possibility of an ‘NXT Canada’.
Besides the reasons I outlined, such as the presence of a strong indy wrestling scene situated right in Mississauga, Ontario, there is a similar footprint that can be copied from the original NXT. NXT takes place at Full Sail in Winter Park, Florida, a suburb of Orlando, so not directly inside the major metropolis. Likewise, Mississauga is conveniently right next to the country’s largest city.
Pardon my bias, but there is also the Battle Arts Academy run by former WWE wrestler Santino Marella. Barring the current arrangement the facility has with Impact Wrestling to do TV tapings, the arena could play host to a potential NXT program. If there needs to be the creation of a Canadian version of the Performance Centre, there’s actually plenty of space around Toronto to have one.
With the competition from promotions like AEW building, the proven popularity of the NXT brand and another successful version of it in the United Kingdom, seeing a Canadian version of NXT may become a reality sooner than you think.
An average professional doing the 9-5 grind who really loves wrestling across all platforms. Here's hoping wrestlers finally get some basic workers rights in 2021.
