Last week’s Impact was notable for one hell of a bombshell: a new championship title was coming.
In the “old days”, a title like this would be something like the “World Television Championship”, of which I still have my own memories of. I think back to the WCW TV title and the classic best of seven series between Booker T and Chris Benoit. AEW’s TNT Championship has had more defences on television than it’s world title, and it’s literally named after the network they are currently on. As of this writing, AEW has introduced the ‘TBS Championship’ for their women’s division to mark the move of Dynamite to the TBS network.
What will define this new title under the Impact Wrestling umbrella? First, the pattern resembles circuit boards which makes sense, but one glaring trait is the design is very similar to the one used for the AEW Championship. Some on Twitter have joked that this new title was the “love child” of the AEW title and the Impact World Championship.
I also noticed the promotional video package was a collage of male and female wrestlers, such as Jordynn Grace, Chelsea Green, Johnny Swinger for example. This gives me an indication that the Digital Media Championship would be contested in intergender matches open to all genders. Let’s just hope, that with people like Swinger or even Fallah Bahh, that it doesn’t become a joke championship like the WWE’s infamous 24/7 title.
My final thought is this Digital Media Championship is in a unique position because Impact has booked both the World and X Division title in a way that it seems both championships are on equal footing. Josh Alexander elevated the X Division to another with his tenure as champion, a division that has been part of Impact since the beginning.
We may see a future Impact Wrestling where it’s almost like there are two titles on the same ‘world championship’ status, with a uniquely named title befitting of Impact’s current structure as more of a digital media product.
An average professional doing the 9-5 grind who really loves wrestling across all platforms. Here's hoping wrestlers finally get some basic workers rights in 2021.
