Wow, really….
Sorry, I’m writing this after watching Double or Nothing, so comparing that with what transpired this past week with the new title on WWE, underwhelming is probably an understatement when it comes to this revamped version of the ‘Hardcore Championship’.
When it was first announced that WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley would unveil a new title on Money in the Bank, the smart money was that it was going to be the reintroduction of the Hardcore Championship from the early 2000’s. Even the revamped concept of ’24/7′ in the new title wasn’t that surprising given the company’s more PG format; I mean Vince McMahon supposedly changed the Viking Raiders because he didn’t like the word ‘War’ being on TV. ‘Hardcore’ definitely would not have fit that bill.
I actually like bringing back the concept of a championship being ‘defended’ on a 24 hours, 7 days a week basis. I remember fondly the days when Crash Holly (may he rest in peace) had all those entertaining segments when he was defending the hardcore title after saying he would do so ’24/7′. Even the dreaded ‘Hardcore Evening Gown’ match between WWE legends Pat Patterson and Gerald Brisco were entertaining as hell, no matter how disgusting.
But while the concept in principle is good, it is doubtful that the title will actually span across all of WWE’s brands. While Foley said the 24/7 title is open to everyone, even those on NXT and NXT UK, I don’t think that will happen. The reason I say that is NXT and the UK brand deliver a more much serious wrestling programme and style, it’s hard to imagine NXT superstars running around for that thing. Those brands actually use their mid-carders and lower tier talent.
As for the design, I believe it was designed because the title was going to change hands on a numerous basis higher than the average title, WWE needed to make something more light and easier to carry around. Hence, you notice that the 24/7 championship doesn’t even have custom side plates for whomever the titleholder is, since you could conceivably have three to four champions on one episode of RAW.
The design on the center plate, rather than just an ambiguous “24/7”, could have been something like the sign of infinity ( ∞ ) would have been more interesting to look at.
I wouldn’t be surprised if midway, WWE actually does decide to change the design of the 24/7 Championship.
An average professional doing the 9-5 grind who really loves wrestling across all platforms. Here's hoping wrestlers finally get some basic workers rights in 2021.
