Many rejoiced when Seth Rollins cashed in at Wrestlemania 31 and captured the WWE Title from Brock Lesnar, surely this was the dawn of a new era in WWE, surely this reignited the stagnant main event scene. However as Battleground drew to a close and the Undertaker made his triumphant return many were left wondering what was next for Seth Rollins?
In the weeks since Battleground WWE have decided that John Cena is the ideal candidate to face Seth at the summer’s biggest PPV, the match it self will be winner takes all as the US title and World title will be up for grabs at Summerslam. While this match is quite a marquee event it once again shows how ill prepared WWE are when it comes to their Heavyweight scene after the once dominated John Cena decade of destruction, which come Monday 24th August may return once more. Did John get granted the title shot due to great showings as US champion? Did he deserve the match, due to defeating Seth, in his US open challenge? Or was it WWE not knowing what to do with Seth come Summerslam?
Even prior to Seth’s crowning as WWE champion the main event scene within the company had been stagnating, I think it was the reason WWE put the title on Brock at Summerslam 2014. However getting back to present day. The world title picture is as bad as it’s ever been, not that I’m blaming Seth Rollins, he has done an admirable job as champion. The blame for the lack of main event calibre stars, sits firmly with the WWE hierarchy, who since the inception of the John Cena era decided to stop producing the talent required to build a competitive division.
The sins of the past decade have now come full circle as WWE now struggles with finding suitable stars capable of carrying a high profile feud and if lucky, eventually capturing the WWE title. Although that’s not to say WWE doesn’t have them at their disposal. On the main roster alone you have Cesaro, Kevin Owens, Dean Ambrose, Roman Reigns, who I believe could all hold the WWE title and make it a reign to remember. Even in NXT you have top tier talent such as Finn Balor, Samoa Joe and further down the line Sami Zayn. Every name mentioned is capable of being the ‘man’ in WWE but the company always seems unsure of what direction to take when the moment rears it’s head. So it’s obvious that they have the talent around them to make a competitive division yet why don’t they?
WWE likes the their type of champion, and more often than not it’s the look of the person nominated that defines their chance of breaking through the proverbial glass ceiling. However it’s those parameters that prohibit the names mentioned above. There is no doubt someone like Cesaro isn’t worthy of being a World Championbut he has all the attributes capable of making himself the face of the WWE,.Then we also have Kevin Owens who in my opinion could carry the pressure of being champion and the face of the company. Personally why WWE don’t push these stars fully is beyond me, they have proved themselves elsewhere and are more than ready to become bona-fide main event stars.
So what next after the World title match at Summerslam?. Personally this title match is a bad idea for Seth Rollins, John Cena and WWE, it leads nowhere from a storyline perspective and if Rollins loses he will surely fall back down the roster after becoming the latest victim of Super Cena.
