It appears that all the talk and the rumours have actually had some truth to it all along. After months of speculation coming off Goldberg’s involvement in the WWE 2K17 video game, it appears that there will be a lot more than just a video game appearance for the man called Goldberg. It now seems that Goldberg will be returning at Survivor Series to do battle with Brock Lesnar in a very special event in Toronto.
This will no doubt be the main event of the show, unless some other insanely big match is planned for later on in the show. Goldberg’s grand returning is happening in the biggest of fashions against the most over wrestler in WWE for the last five years. This is the rematch of one of the most infamous WrestleMania matches of all time, when Brock and Bill “clashed” at WrestleMania XX in front of hostile crowd at Madison Square Garden. That was in 2004. More than twelve years later, the two will clash again in Goldberg’s first match ever since that infamous match.
If you’ll recall, their last match was somewhat of an abysmal encounter. Feel free to say that to their faces as they’ll probably agree with you. Goldberg has even stated in past interviews about how both men’s hearts weren’t in it on the night. Brock Lesnar was headed to the NFL while Goldberg was not renewing his contract with WWE. With both men being slandered by the crowd, the motivation to deliver was not as strong when there wasn’t a lot to gain. In 2016, they have a chance to rectify that wrong. Or do they?
Brock Lesnar has shown to be even more awesome now than he was twelve years. He may not be as athletically agile as he was back in the day and is probably not busting out shooting star presses any time soon, but his simple but high-impact style makes for must-see television. Goldberg had a similar style… twelve years ago. Goldberg’s not been able to adapt and change up his style as he’s simply not had a match since.
He may be physically the same than he was twelve years ago, but he’s probably not in the same match-fitness shape as he was before. This maybe trouble, unless they want to throw him into a house show match before the show in order for him to be match-ready for Brock.
The point is that you obviously shouldn’t expect the same sort of potential we expected from Brock and Goldberg at their prime. The two men are old and wiser in terms of protecting themselves. Goldberg might want to go all out in what could possibly be a one-off match for him but he’s still not the same age he was twelve years ago. He may want to do an insane spot like a spear off the stage or something but it’s all about preservation when you’re fighting a one time battle.
The anticipation for this match will be pretty high, especially with the return of Goldberg. What hurts WWE is actually the fact that this match will likely be the main event. At the Royal Rumble, Triple H won the Royal Rumble. At WrestleMania, the likes of Triple H, Undertaker, Brock Lesnar and even Shane McMahon were in the big matches. At SummerSlam, Brock was in the main event over both the Universal and WWE World title matches. All of these stars, that were stars many years ago, are still headlining these big events over younger talent.
It’s really a flaw when WWE doesn’t have enough confidence in their talent to be able to headline such an event. It prevents these stars from becoming bigger stars and when the WWE run out of part-timers and old stars to use, that will leave their star power hilariously limited.
As exciting as appealing as this match maybe, it may not be the right time for the beast to fight Goldberg.
