#MouthingOff with MikeJC: Dynamite Weekly, Friday May 28th #AEWDynamite Ep.86 (@MikeJC821)

Welcome, everyone to the latest edition of #MouthingOff (with MikeJC): Dynamite Weekly, the weekly review feature on AEW Dynamite here on SLTDWrestling.com. I will be giving my thoughts and opinions on all the highlights of the show as well as giving the “Remarkable Wrestler” of the week. So here are the highlights of the Double Or Nothing Go-Home show on Friday, May 28th edition of AEW Dynamite.

Darby Allin vs. Cezar Bononi

AEW kicked off with this match that wasn’t bad, it was really a nothing match to get Darby ready for the pay-per-view on Sunday. Bononi get a little power spots in including a scary choke toss over the top onto the ramp that sounded painful. Darby however got the upper hand back using his speed and agility to get Bononi off his feet and he hits a Coffin Drop for the pinfall victory.

After the match Darby gets on the mic and calls out Ethan Page and Scorpio Sky because he doesn’t want to wait for Sunday he and Sting want to fight them now. They come out and say they aren’t going to fight Darby and Sting in their street clothes when they look as good as they do and they pass and go to leave. Sting and Darby are then attacked from behind by Ryan Nemath, JD Drake, and Bononi attack Sting and Darby, then Ethan Page and Scorpio Sky come back out to help as well. They all beat down Sting and Darby and go to pillmanize Sting’s leg but The Dark Order make the save to end the segment.

Segment Rating: 5/10

This was a fine match as mentioned but it was what it was a tune up match for Darby, the segment as a whole, I rated a little hire because of the post match beat down and the storytelling that went a long with it. That’s pretty much it.

Cody Rhodes & Anthony Ogogo Weigh-Ins

Oh boy was this bad, Paul Wight was moderating this for some reason, he made a joke about not being able to work a scale I guess because he’s big, I really don’t know. Anthony Ogogo comes out with all of the The Factory, and QT is taunting the crowd because they are booing The Factory and he says “Why you guys booing Paul Wight.” So it doesn’t get more sophomoric then that. Then Cody comes out with a giant entourage, Arn Anderson, Dustin Rhodes, one of his sisters whose never appeared on screen like ever, and a bunch of Nightmare family trainees. They do a standard boxing style weigh-in, stripping to their underwear, Cody weighs in at 218 pounds (they think) because Wight had trouble with scale which made it drag. Ogogo apparently weighed in at 219 pounds. QT gets on the mic again and actually says “Anthony is heavier, Anthony is going to win” which is one of the stupidest things someone can say on a wrestling show ever. There’s no fight, no actual promo it was a complete waste of time.

Segment Rating: 2/10

I almost wanted to give this a zero that’s how much I hated it. It helped nobody, it was a complete waste of time that just didn’t need to happen. Weigh-ins don’t work in wrestling, they don’t matter they don’t mean anything. Everything QT said didn’t make sense, and it was all dumb, no promos by the people in the match, Cody thanked the fans like the show was over I hated this a lot.

“Hangman” Adam Page vs. Joey Janela

This was a pretty good match in I believe the first time these two have met since All In. This match was hard hitting and back and forth for the most part. At some point Hangman got busted open hard way and it was a crazy visual. A lot of great action, and I think Joey Janela doesn’t get the credit he deserves for always working hard in his matches and how good he is at selling and making his opponents look good. Hangman gets the win with the Buck Shot Lariat and pinfall.

After the match Taz who was on commentary says he has a friend who wants to have some words with Adam Page, his opponent on Sunday, Brian Cage. So Cage comes out and gets in the ring, and Hangman says that he knows that the rest of Team Taz will attack him and Ricky Starks and Hook come out as well and get on the apron, and Page says that Brian Cage shouldn’t need their help because of how big he is and tells Cage to leave his boys in the back on Sunday and fight him like a man to end the segment.

Segment Rating: 6/10

This was a very good match, and good promo after and inadvertently the blood all over Adam Page’s face actually helped this promo, it was a fun match, good tune up for Hangman. I look forward to see how these guys work a full match at the pay-per-view and not like the one they had a few weeks ago that ended early because of shenanigans.

AEW World Championship Competitors Get Physical

So Tony Schiavone is in the ring, and says he’s here to get an answer about what’s been going on with Orange Cassidy, but Cassidy doesn’t come out, PAC does. PAC says that he is the one that Kenny needs to worry about and not Orange Cassidy. So he calls out Callis and Omega, but Don Callis shows up on the screen, which he says he’s not there to cause a distraction so Omega can attack him from behind. The Good Brothers also come out and help Omega beat up PAC and the Lucha Bros come out to help. Omega stays in the ring as The Good Brothers retreat, Orange Cassidy comes out with The Best Friends and makes his way to the ring and has an envelope in his hand that says “To Kenny”, he gives it to Omega and when he opens it he gets a shredded piece of paper making it clear he isn’t backing out of the title match and gives Omega an Orange Punch. He also fights of PAC and hold up the title to end the segment.

Segment Rating: 5.5/10

I enjoyed this segment, it did what it was supposed to and that’s getting us hyped for the title match which It did it’s job. I love all three of these guys and am looking forward to this match possibly being one of the best matches on the pay-per-view card. They sold me a ticket in believing that Orange Cassidy or PAC could stand a chance even though I think we all know Kenny will retain but it will be good regardless.

TNT Championship: Miro (c) vs. Dante Martin

This match was exactly what you’d expect, a complete mauling of Dante Martin. Dante’s only offensive signs was a dropkick in the corner but other then that it was all Miro, basically ending the match as soon as he hit a superkick, locked in the Game Over for the submission victory.

Post match, Jake Roberts and Lance Archer come out, Jake cuts a promo, and Miro gets on the mic and says lets stop this cat and mouse game and tells Jake to let Archer in the ring so they can fight, and he obliges. They brawl all around the ring and refs break it up.

Segment Rating: 5/10

This again was exactly what it needed to be, Miro getting a dominant win and title defense right before his big title match at the pay-per-view, we are all excited to see this hoss battle at the pay-per-view as far as I can tell because they made us want to see these two fight each other and it’s gonna be good.

Ethan Page & Scorpio Sky vs. The Dark Order (Evil Uno & Stu Grayson)

This was a hell of a match out of the gate, again basically a tune up match for the people competing on the Double Or Nothing show, these two teams worked very well together and I look forward to seeing Ethan and Scorpio as a team more after the pay-per-view because they are very good. The Dark Order member did more then I expected and that’s fine. The finish of this match was pretty cool as well, after Grayson had hit a great looking 450 splash for a near fall, Sky rakes the eyes of Evil Uno and then locks the heel hook on Grayson and Ethan Page hits the Ego’s Edge on Uno for the pinfall.

Post match, Page and Sky cut a promo about how they will get the job done on Sunday then Sting’s music plays and Darby Allin comes out with an army of men in Sting masks. Darby goes right Ethan, and Sky disposes of a bunch of the fake Stings then hits another one who turns out to be the real Sting, Scorpio and Ethan Page retreat to end the segment.

Segment Rating: 6.25/10

This was my favorite match of the show, there was a lot of great action, Uno & Grayson looked good even in the loss, Sky and Page using heel tactics to get the win, it worked and told the story the way it needed to. The stuff after the match was corny in the way that is okay for wrestling standards, and it’s so Sting for him to do something like that and I enjoyed that. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens with this pay-per-view match as well.

Celebration of the Inner Circle

Eric Bischoff is out to honor the Inner Circle and he talks about how he fronted the best faction in the history of wrestling in the NWO, and he says that the group he’s about to introduce might be on track to take that title which is a ridiculous claim. He introduces the Inner Circle. Jericho apologizes to Bischoff for their past encounters in AEW. They then throw to a video package, showing all the moments of the Inner Circle, which just so happens to be all heel thing since they just recently turned face. Santana talks about everything they been through as a group and through the pandemic, and if this is their last dance he wouldn’t have it any other way in front of fans, Ortiz then says that was beautiful.

Hager says they need to celebrate the hard times too and that he wants to see those moments celebrated. Guevara speaks next and he gets a standing ovation. He says they have been together through everything, he even used to come out wearing a panda head.  He says there was a time when they didn’t have his back, and he didn’t like it. He will do everything he can do to make sure it doesn’t happen again, and thanks them.

Jericho says he was hesitant to put a group together as he doesn’t play well with others. He then saw a photo of them together and felt like they looked like a bunch of badasses. He says on Sunday, it will be a battle, a war, and they will go down in a blaze of glory. If it is the last time, he tells them group “I love you.” The group hugs and they flip off the camera.

Then MJF shows up on the screen says that was really emotional and mocks it and asks Wardlow what he thought, then he says “what do you think Dean” and they have Dean Malenko beat up on the Jacksonville Jaguars field. The Inner Circle runs to go make the save. They are cut off on the way there by The Pinnacle. They are beat up onto the field and hit with chairs and everything and FTR gives Santana & Ortiz piledrivers off of a platform into two tables. MJF says their catch phrase to the camera as they do their hands in pose to end the show.

Segment Rating: 5/10

I didn’t love this segment but like everything else on this show it did the job. The Stadium Stampede match will certainly be something at Double Or Nothing and it will be interesting to see how it goes. The brawl part of this segment is what made it for me. The Dean Malenko part was a nice touch after last week when they established him and Jericho’s friendship. Also on Twitter The Pinnacle posted a picture of them urinating on the Inner Circle logo on the football field. I really hope this match is good.

Remarkable Wrestler of the Week

For this episode of AEW Dynamite the Remarkable Wrestler of the Week is, “Hangman” Adam Page.

Hangman gets the RWOW this week for his great performance in his match with Joey Janela, as well as the unintended great visual of him having blood all over his face while he cut his promo after, I loved that.

Overall

This was a fine go home episode of AEW Dynamite, on a Friday, overall I give it a 5 out of 10. A lot of the matches weren’t amazing but all did what they were supposed to do. That weigh-in segment was god awful and I can’t believe they thought that was a good idea. As far as segments not rated because they weren’t needed really Jade versus Kilynn King was a pretty good match, Moxley and Kingston had another amazing promo towards The Young Bucks which I loved. A Shida one year champion celebration that ended with a great promo by Britt Baker, as well as a backstage fight between Christian Cage and Will Hobbs. This Sunday is AEW Double Or Nothing, and you can look out for my predictions to that show coming out tomorrow.
