Welcome, everyone to the latest edition of #MouthingOff (with MikeJC): Dynamite Weekly, the weekly review feature on AEW Dynamite here on SLTDWrestling.com. I will be giving my thoughts and opinions on all the highlights of the show as well as giving the “Remarkable Wrestler” of the week. So here are the highlights of the Saturday, June 26th edition of AEW Dynamite.
“Hangman” Adam Page vs. Powerhouse Hobbs
At the very beginning of this show we see a video from earlier of Alex Marvez trying to get an interview with Sammy Guevara and he’s attacked by Shawn Spears with a chair. Spears said he promised he’d get him and this is for MJF, good luck on Wednesday.
Then we get the entrances of Hobbs and Page, and this was a hard hitting affair from the get go. Hobbs was laying in all his shots and had momentum in his favor for a while using his power to get the advantage for most of the match. Hangman at one point gets busted open on the side of his head and covers his hair in blood.
Later for some reason Ricky Starks comes out holding the FTW Championship presumably to give it to Hobbs to use as a weapon but Brian Cage comes out to take it back and goes after Starks chasing him to the back which distracts Hobbs. He turns around as Hangman comes in attempting a buckshot lariat but Hobbs turns it into a very good looking spinebuster for a near fall. The continue to fight back and forth and Hangman eventually hits the Deadeye for the pinfall victory.
Segment Rating: 6.25/10
I enjoy this match a lot, it was hard hitting, it made both guys look good in the ring and it continued Hangman’s rise back to the top of the rankings and telling the story of him getting back into the title picture by getting a hard fought victory. As far as the Team Taz stuff who knows, I guess when Starks is cleared him and Cage are going to face at some point and go from there of Cage being on his own. However the stuff that Team Taz has been doing with the FTW title just cause is getting annoying.
Tully Blanchard and Konnan Exchange
Tony Schiavone is in the ring with Tully Blanchard and then Tony introduces Konnan. Konnan talks about FTR has been comparing themselves to Santana & Ortiz saying they had similar upbringings, but FTR didn’t grow up in the streets like Santana & Ortiz. He says FTR didn’t have hardships growing up like Santana & Ortiz and he will always have their backs because they are like sons to him. Tully threatens Konnan and Konnan says he figured that something like this would happen and thats why he’s had his boys waiting for this very situation.
Santana & Ortiz come out so we think and Tully directs Konnan’s attention to the big screen and Santana & Ortiz are laid out. Then FTR reveal themselves pretending to be Santana & Ortiz and they beat up Konnan and give him a spike piledriver.
Segment Rating: 6.5/10
i enjoyed this segment as well it did its job and then some. Now it’s personal now FTR put their hands on the family of Santana & Ortiz. I’ve wanted a wrestling match from these two teams but it’s very clear to me this match will be a street fight. Either way I can’t wait.
Dante Martin vs. Matt Sydal
Before this match right after Dante Martin’s entrance Vickie Guerrero introduced Andrade and she called him a future champion and said they had a surprise but before they could reveal it Matt Sydal made his entrance for the match. Andrade looked pissed so I think Sydal will probably be Andrade’s debut match.
As for this match they went from zero to sixty and it was all Dante Martin for the most part. His athleticism and attention to detail is off the charts, and it’s mind blowing that not only is Dante Martin only twenty years old he is as old as Matt Sydal has been wrestling that’s crazy.
Dante Martin did a crazy looking sunset flip, and front flip stunner both unbelievable. Sydal hit a meteora to a downed Martin for a near fall which looked so good. Sydal eventually gets the uper hand and hits his finisher for the victory.
Segment Rating: 6/10
This was such a good showcase match. Dante Martin has no right being as good as his is at his age and when him and his brother reach their prime and develop their characters a little more they are going to be big stars. Sydal gets another win to build him up to that Andrade match that should be a hell of a match, I don’t recall ever seeing them wrestle and I’m pretty they never have so it should be a great first meeting.
MJF Has Words for Inner Circle/Brawl and Guevara Stands Tall
MJF is being interviewed by Alex Marvez backstage and he has Wardlow and Shawn Spears with him. He talks about attacking Jericho last week but he’s curious why people are so mad about him attacking Dean Malenko. He mentions that Malenko is 60 years old, has a heart condition and Parkinson’s Disease and fans should be thanking him for giving Malenko an early retirement.
Jericho and Hager appear and attack them despite thr number not being in their favor. They eventually fight down to the ring and MJF holding Jericho’s arm for Spears to hit with a chair, but Sammy Guevara makes the save and cleans house, gives Wardlow a chair shot to the face and gives Spears a receipt for the earlier chair shot to the shoulder and gives Spears one too.
Guevara would get on the mic after MJF fleed and told MJF that he’s going to prove why AEW picked the wrong guy to be the future of the business and the wrong guy to get an action figure, and prove that he’s best ever and you know it
Segment Rating: 5.75/10
This was another segment that worked and did it’s job. Now yes there’s a lot of groups fighting ans interfering on this show but this one helped put ovef Sammy Guevara as the center point of the story right now and that’s good because he’s the future. I don’t think he’s gonna beat MJF on Wednesday though. It’s not time for that to happen yet it will when it’s the right time but not now.
Ethan Page vs. Bear Bronson
Man is Ethan Page just so good at everything. This match proved to me how good he truly is even though I kind of already knew. He played mind games throughout the match, he used that to get the upper hand when the time was right. His facial reactions are great and always hit at the right time. Even when he didn’t have control his reactions were perfect.
Credit to Bear Bronson as well who did his part to perfection as well as the bigger babyface who had control for a good amount of time and looked good doing it. Scorpio Sky at one point sacrificed himself to help Ethan get the upper hand, and a little while after that Ethan used a low blow behind the refs back again because of a Scorpio Sky distraction to set a nice looking Ego’s Edge to secure the pinfall victory.
After the match Ethan would call out Darby Allin once again proclaiming that he’d never be done with him until he’s dead in the ground and that he’d be the nail in Darby Allin’s coffin and that’s why he’s gonna put him in one, and challenges Darby to a coffin match.
Segment Rating: 5.5/10
Another enjoyable match and both guys came out looking good with Ethan Page getting the much needed victory to build more momentum towards this ultimate showdown with Darby Allin at Road Rager on July 7th. This of course will be AEW’s take on the casket match that we only know Undertaker to be famous for in WWE, so it will be interesting to see how AEW does it with these two, that should be very interesting and I expect this will be Darby’s way of getting one over on Ethan without having to pin him.
The Bunny vs. Kris Statlander
This was another decent match on this show that once again established some story and also showcased how much Allie (The Bunny) has improved in the ring. These two had some pretty good chemistry early but there was some spots that went slower then usual.
At one point Bunny tried to use brass knuckles but Orange Cassidy got involved and put them in his pocket. Statlander would get the win clean and Bunny was checked on after the match but apparently she was fine. Post match The Blade would attack Cassidy and bump him into Statlander and continue beating him down with the help of TH2, and it was mentioned that The Best Friends are not their because Trent? had spinal fusion surgery to correct spinal stenosis. So I actually like this beat down because it made sense.
Segment Rating: 5/10
This was a fine match and the right person won. Statlander continues her rise and I fully expect by the end of the year for her to be in the title picture and she is definitely a future champion. The stuff after the match as I mentioned worked here with Orange Cassidy being all alone and nobody to help him so im sure in future weeks Cassidy will have a bunch of singles matches and tags with Chuck before Trent? is back again.
AEW World Championship: Kenny Omega vs. Jungle Boy
The build to this match has been great, every single person was doubting Jungle Boy throughout the story that got us here, nobody gave him a chance at all. Now don’t get me wrong the result was never in doubt but the point is to sell it enough that you believe the underdog has a chance and they did that on the way here and during the match.
Most of the match Kenny was in control and Jungle Boy would have a bursts of energy that made you believe. At one point after already being kicked out Marko Stunt and Luchasaurus along with Kazarian were facing off with The Good Brothers and that little distraction caused a little hault in the action but didn’t hault the momentum. They made a point to show Jungle Boy’s family sitting front row throughout to get their reaction.
Jungle Boy tried the Snare Trap a couple times to finish the match but Kenny fought it off by getting to the ropes and also pulling Jungle Boy’s hair. Kenny would drop Jungle Boy on the turnbuckle hit a V-Trigger to the back of the head and hit a One Winged Angel to secure his victory and retain the title.
After the match Kenny went to hit Jungle Boy with the championship but Christian Cage would make the save. He would also fight off Private Party and Matt Hardy and then when Christian went to hit the Killswitch on Kenny he turned around to receive super kicks from both Young Bucks and then a twist of fate from Matt Hardy to end the show with the heels celebrating.
Segment Rating: 7.5/10
This was such a good match and proved how good Jungle Boy already is and he has so much time to improve and reach his prime and get better. AEW needs to stop the the groups attacking eachother before and after every match though, especially to close the show. It wasn’t needed here at all, it wasn’t needed numerous times throughout this show. Regardless of all that I loved this so much, Kenny continues his dominance as champion and of course more build to Christian versus Matt Hardy and this will surely lead to multiple tag matches between all pwople involved.
Remarkable Wrestler of the Week
For this episode of AEW Dynamite, the Remarkable Wrestler of the Week is, Jungle Boy.
Nobody else would be deserving of the RWOW this week. Jungle Boy proved once again that he can go with the best and he just gets better and better. He’s a future world champion maybe not for a another 5 to 10 years but it will happen and we will know we saw it coming that’s how good he is.
Overall
This was a great episode of Dynamite to get us ready for the return to Wednesday on a weekly basis with full crowds back for good, overall I give this episode of Dynamite a 6.1 out 10. There was a lot of good wrestling and a lot of good storytelling throughout this show. As far as things not rated on this show there eas some good back and forth promos by The Young Bucks and an answer from Eddie Kingston & Penta El Zero Miedo ahead of their match on Wednesday, and the same from TNT Champion Miro and his challenger Brian Pillman Jr. Also Britt Baker addressed the tag match of her and Rebel against Nyla Rose and Vickie Guerrero and they responded and announced Nyla gets her title shot at Fyter Fest. Those were some decent promos but not worth rating.
