Welcome, everyone to the latest edition of #MouthingOff (with MikeJC): Dynamite Weekly, the weekly review feature on AEW Dynamite here on SLTDWrestling.com. I will be giving my thoughts and opinions on all the highlights of the show as well as giving the “Remarkable Wrestler” of the week. So here are the highlights of the Wednesday, April 28th edition of AEW Dynamite.
“Hangman” Adam Page vs. Brian Cage
Dynamite kicked off with a brawl before this match as while Page was making his entrance he was attacked from behind by all of Team Taz, Dark Order would make the save for Page, officials would come out to break it up and get all the people not in the match out, Cage then hits a powerbomb on the ramp, which would be the deciding move even before the match starts. The match ends up being all Cage because of this. I was surprised this is the route they decided to go here with Page having the streak but I think this will be the reason why he doesn’t get a World Title shot until much later to further build him as the one to eventually beat Kenny. These two worked really well together and it made Cage look like a monster. Page tried to fire up towards the end but Cage was too much for him and hit the Drill Claw for the surprising pinfall victory.
Segment Rating: 6/10
I was very surprised by this match for obvious reasons, Page was on a huge roll and this halts his momentum a little but not completely. As I mentioned I think this was to get him out of the World Title picture for the time being and maybe it will set him on a different path until it’s time for him to face Omega because when that happens he is going to win. Also this is probably going to further the differences between Starks and Cage. Cage will probably hold this over Starks because he was able to beat Page and Starks couldn’t so I expect more of that.
Matt & Mike Sydal vs. The Young Bucks
What a match, and this isn’t even the best match of the night. This was a great match with a lot of action. The Young Bucks have been very cocky lately and I love that character change for them and there was numerous time throughout this match that their cockiness was almost their downfall. It seemed like they weren’t taking the Sydal Brothers seriously. The action was back and forth for the most part and these teams had tremendous chemistry. The Bucks tried numerous times to end the match early but the Sydals had an answer for everything. Matt Sydal especially was on fire and he really showed out in this one. The finish came when the ref was distracted (which doesn’t take much when Rick Knox is your ref), The Young Bucks hit a low blow on Mike Sydal, then hit double super kicks, and followed that with the BTE Trigger for the pinfall victory.
After the match, SCU came out, to address the Young Bucks, and talked about how they were looking forward to facing their friends for the tag team titles but they don’t recognize their friends anymore and that even though their next loss as a team would mean the end of SCU, they need to teach these Young Bucks a lesson.
Segment Rating: 6.5/10
This was an amazing match, the evolution of the Young Bucks into these characters has been great, they continue to prove why they are as good as they say they are. The Sydal Brothers looked great as well and this was a great showcase for them as a team. The promo after setting up SCU getting their title shot soon was great as well and I’m immediately excited to see that match because of this promo. Also I love the Brandon Cutler young boy stuff and the spraying them with cool down spray and using the ice packs is such a nice touch to this stuff.
Orange Cassidy vs. Penta El Zero Miedo
This match is exactly what I wanted out of these two and more. Orange Cassidy is a star, there’s no denying that ever, he is a top tier talent on this roster. Penta is a great heel and shows it in his work recently, and Alex as his manager is getting better but I just don’t need him getting involved in the matches and causing distractions, especially when the match is this good. Some spots I really loved was when Orange went for a suicide dive and Penta caught him into a Gorilla Press Slam, even holding him up with one hand. When Penta went for the armbreaker but Orange fought out of it and powered by getting his hand in his pocket. So much great stuff in this match. The finish came when Alex tried to cause a distraction again but Cassidy brought him in the hard way and Penta tried to capitalize with the Package Piledriver, but Cassidy fought out of it and then Trent? gave the microphone that was introduced by Alex to Cassidy and he uses it to deliver the Orange Punch for the victory.
Segment Rating: 6.75/10
I absolutely loved this match it’s so worth the watch. It’s so freaking good. I didn’t need the shenanigans at the beginning of the match but it doesn’t affect how good the actual match is. It continues the feud between Death Triangle and The Best Friends and I look forward to seeing all the members of both teams every week just doing what they do best. The eventual six man will happen that will probably be the thing that ends the feud probably.
The Pinnacle & Inner Circle Parley
What a promo, this entire thing was amazing. All of it was prefect, all of it was a fire promo. Everyone got a word in, everyone showed passion, everyone showed they are ready to fight. This was Jericho’s best promo in a long time and I loved every second of it. This promo did exactly what is supposed to do and then some, and that is sell me a ticket to the Blood & Guts match, they did that on a level I couldn’t have even imagined. All I can say is watch this promo. Watch the personal nature of this promo by everyone involved. It’s masterful. Guevara said he plans to start the match and tells The Pinnacle they can have the advantage because he wants to be in there to beat all of them. Dax Harwood telling Santana & Ortiz that to tell their kids that Daddy isn’t coming home was so old school and so masterfully delivered, Jericho having a passionate promo answering MJF’s comments about him jerking the curtain when Jericho was 25 was delivered great. All of it, I implore anyone to watch this and if you did watch it again, before the match.
Segment Rating: 10/10
I can’t express enough how good this promo is, watch it, I can’t wait for the Blood & Guts match next week they sold the hell of it with this promo alone also lets not forget to mention how Hager not talking was a good thing anything he would have said would have probably hurt this, sorry not sorry. Blood & Guts is gonna amazing, and I can’t wait.
Kingston and Moxley Get What They Want
So earlier in the night The Elite did a promo from a car talking about having all the belts and they talk about how they aren’t scared of Moxley and Kingston and what they did last week didn’t scare them or bother them. Then they hear horns again just like last week and get a jump scare from them, we find out it was Nakazawa whose driving the car who hit the wrong button. Then Omega tells Kingston that he’s facing Nakazawa tonight.
So Nakazawa is in the ring wearing his clothes and not his ring gear, and brought the laptop with him. Kingston comes out and calls this a joke, and calls out Omega. Omega says that he’s gonna send the goons after Kingston, and Nakazawa hits Kingston with the laptop but it doesn’t work then he puts Nakazawa’s leg in between a chair, and threatens he’ll stomp on it, Omega tells him to do because Nakazawa knows what he signed up for. Omega then calls out Brandon Cutler who is crawling because he was attacked by Moxley. Moxley attacks Omega and brings him to the ring and they then put Omega’s leg in between a chair. They threaten to stomp on it unless they get what they want, Don Callis is pleading them and says they will make it work and he pleads more and says they can have whatever they want, they said they want Omega and Nakazawa in a tag match next week and they get it.
Segment Rating: 5/10
So I thought this was fine, I don’t know why they want to face Kenny and Nakazawa and not the Young Bucks though. It is what it is, it’s clear that Nakazawa will be getting pinned next week, hopefully the match is fine, but this was kind of unnecessary to me. We’ll see what this leads to.
Penelope Ford vs. Kris Statlander
I enjoyed this match, but I did feel it was a little long, but that didn’t hurt it too much. Statlander is on a new level recently and I love her work since her return and she’s really getting better and better in the ring and she looks like a powerhouse in the division which they have been lacking. She’s going to be a big deal very soon. Penelope has improved a lot and I think she will do big things as well in the future, not now obviously but she will get there. The finish saw Sabian try to get involved but Orange Cassidy took care of him, then Stat hit the Big Bang for the pinfall victory.
Also it was mentioned that Miro would talk to Kip later and we Kip going to talk to Miro and Miro attacks him immediately and slams him around the locker room and then hugs him and says he forgives him.
Segment Rating: 5.25/10
This was a pretty good match as I’ve mentioned it felt a little long but it didn’t hurt the match, both ladies got a chance to showcase their talent which is fine. This match didn’t need a commercial break. Regardless Statlander continues her movement up the rankings and I think when Britt Baker wins the title (because we know it’s happening) her and Statlander could have a very good feud. Also the I liked the Miro attack and glad Miro is moving away from the silliness.
Trios Match: Billy Gunn, Dustin Rhodes & Lee Johnson vs. The Factory (QT Marshall, Nick Comoroto & Aaron Solow)
This Factory/Nightmare Family stuff isn’t working for me. It just isn’t, because I just don’t care about QT Marshall, and that’s the underlining thing here. When the person whose basically the center of this thing just isn’t doing it for you it hurts everyone else. This is probably a big deal to Cody and QT because they’re friends and they are probably having a blast, but I just don’t care about QT, and I don’t know a lot of fans that do. This should be the showcase of the younger guys Lee Johnson, Colton & Austin Gunn, Nick Comoroto, Aaron Solow, Anthony Ogogo need to be the focus. All of those guys are just their. Sure these guys are the future but right now they are at the waste side for this pointless QT versus Cody thing that I just don’t need. The Factory came in on Cody’s bus. There’s not a lot to talk about for this match, it’s all over the place and The Factory wins when Ogogo punches Lee Johnson and Bill Gunn in the gut, and QT just pins Johnson.
After the match, Comoroto hits Dustin with a cowbell, and they leave the Nightmare Family laying and they all leave QT alone in the ring and he’s attacked by Austin & Colton Gunn which brings The Factory back out and QT is leaving, going back to the bus, and Cody is in there and he attacks QT, and for some reason instead of leaving QT goes on top of the bus and Cody follows and gives him a Figure Four on the bus, and Aubrey tries to break it up as Cody celebrates.
Segment Rating: 4/10
There’s not much more to say about this, we’re getting Cody versus QT next week and it really doesn’t matter at all. What happens after this, I need the younger talent to be showcased, that’s what I need, not QT as the spotlight. I hope that’s where this goes because Comoroto has a great look and has loads of potential, Solow is really freaking good, Lee Johnson is really freaking good and needs to win matches. I hope this goes there.
TNT Championship: Darby Allin (c) vs. Preston “10” Vance
This was a very good match, I loved that commentary talked about how many defenses Darby has had, and how he’s been defending the title every week to prove he’s a fighting champion. I also like how they talked about Vance was chosen by Brodie and this was his chance to live up to that. It told a good story for the match. This was Darby Allin doing what he does best and making 10 look like a future star even in a loss. Ethan Page would interfere in the match and hit Darby, giving Vance the upper hand. Vance used his power, and locked in a Full Nelson submission and at one point rag dolled Darby and looked like he was gonna get a pass out submission victory, but Darby would climb up the corner and roll through for a surprise pinfall victory. After the match Vance knew Darby got one over on him and helped him up and shook his hand, Darby would take Vance’s Brodie armband and hold it up as a nice tribute.
After Vance left, Scorpio Sky would chop block Sting, and Ethan Page would come back and attack Darby again. Sky put Sting in a heel hook and Page makes Darby watch. Lance Archer and Preston Vance would make the save to end the show.
Segment Rating: 6/10
I really enjoyed this match, and love how Darby continues to defend the belt every week and doing whatever he needs to do to get the victory. This was a great show case for 10 as well. Things with Archer, Sting and Darby continue don’t know where that is going but I’m intrigued, and Ethan Page and Scorpio Sky are still involved as well, so all of this is very intriguing and I want to see where it goes.
Remarkable Wrestler of the Week
For this episode of AEW Dyanmite, the Remarkable Wrestler of the Week is Kris Statlander
I’m giving the RWOW to Statlander this week because I’m really impressed with her new style of offense and just how well she has improved and I’m super excited for her as a whole and I look forward to seeing her work every time she enters a ring. She has a very bright future.
Overall
This was a hell of a show, a lot of great wrestling and an amazing promo to set up next week’s Blood & Guts match which is surely going to be amazing, overall I give it a 6.2 out of 10. The stuff that was good on this show was really, really good. They need to figure out what they are doing with this Nightmare Family/Factory stuff. Other then that I loved this episode of AEW Dynamite.
