On the June 19th edition of Raw, the mystery was finally solved of ‘who attacked Enzo/Cass’, and to the surprise of nobody, Big Cass was outed as the guilty party.
After Corey Graves showed security footage of Cass faking his own attacking (why didn’t he show Kurt Angle this footage earlier to spare him the embarrassment of accusing Big Show?), Cass himself told Enzo “you’re damn right I did it!”. He then led a verbal assault as fans watched on in sorrow as they witnessed the destruction of the ‘realest guys in the room’.
Big Cass cited being held back and having to pick up Amore’s mess through his mouth all the time, and that being with Enzo was the reason he’d never been a champion in WWE.
It was actually quite well done, with Cass coming across as a guy who’d finally snapped after having kept quiet for long enough, and Amore was excellent in his disbelief and questioning of his (now former) tag team partner, even shedding a tear for effect. Cass stated what many people had thought, that Enzo had become the weak link and whilst he ran his mouth, he was always the one to take the loss, leaving Cass to clean up after him.
All reasons we could see coming, and it kind of makes sense, but have they pulled the trigger on an Enzo/Cass split too soon? Well either way, they’re out on their own now, so I’m going to take a brief look at what the future may hold for the 7 foot tall Cass and ‘Certified G’, Enzo.
Big Cass
Many have speculated over Cass ever since his debut on the main roster as to whether he could be a breakout star on his own. He has the ingredients that WWE management look for, big, decent mic skills and marketable.
We were even given a brief look into the future last August when Enzo suffered an injury, and Cass was forced to fly solo on Raw, and it was a success! Fans got behind him, and he even found himself in the newly introduced Universal Title picture, and I didn’t look out of place.
Will fans still get behind him without the gimmick? Will they still be as interested in him as a heel? I think he should come up with his own catchphrase as such (nothing too cheesy), and really become his own brand so he can distance himself from the ‘SAWFT’ and ‘Can’t Teach That’ stuff.
That’s not to say he still couldn’t do all of that stuff before, but I would assume Enzo will still be performing that each week, so to have Cass do it also wouldn’t make much sense.
WWE’s problem with the big guys, is fans find it hard connecting with them, and hating them so much their opponent gets cheered more just because they want to see him beat.
Looking to the future, I wouldn’t expect Big Cass to be propelled to the Universal Title scene anytime soon, there are plenty of options for him going forward once the Enzo angle is tied up. He could begin a rivalry with Big Show, who is still a fantastic all rounder and a great guy to help get a younger talent over.
There’s also a potential rivalry with Roman Reigns (although probably not the best move if WWE want to push Cass as a real bad guy), but there’s also fan favourites Rollins, Ambrose and Finn Balor he could go up against.
The newly announced ‘free agent’ (what’s even with that?), John Cena, would be a great guy for Cass to work against to not only gain more ‘big match feel’ experience, but assert dominance as a top heel on the Raw roster.
I’d be surprised if we saw Cass as Universal Champion before the end of 2017, but I wouldn’t be surprised if somehow his new path led him to the Intercontinental Championship, because after all, that’s why he turned on his best friend in the first place, to be a champion.
Enzo Amore
It worries me, it really worries me to think of the next 3 months for Enzo. Where does he go from here? He’s been booked like a joke for quite a while now, taking after pinfall, being the one beaten down, being written just horribly. Surprisingly, the fans are still very much onside with Amore, but that can only go on for so long.
It’s quite hard to get behind and cheer for someone who you know will just lose anyway (trust me, I’m a Dolph Ziggler fan).
It’s a concern off the bat that WWE might be going ahead with an Enzo vs Cass angle, because with the way both have been booked separately in comparison, and the fact that nobody would buy Enzo beating Cass, it would be another blow to Amore and kick him further down the WWE ladder.
I don’t believe the company have any ideas for the ‘Certified G’ going forward, and I believe the split was done purely for the benefit of Cass and while they have lots of plans for him, they haven’t even begun to think of a next step for Enzo.
There have been rumours of him being moved to 205 Live, but I don’t think that’d be a good move and almost seem like a downgrade, unless they plan to give his whole character a makeover like they did with Neville, which turned out great for ‘The King of The Cruiserweights’, but I’m not sure that’d solve Enzo’s problems.
How I’d book Enzo going forward, is rather than have a match between the two, have him plead with Cass and basically question who he’s become and state that it’s not his best friend talking, he’d never do that.
After weeks of failed attempts, Enzo would then say to his former friend that he doesn’t want to stick around and watch him turn into someone he’s not, he’d then request to General Manager, Kurt Angle, that he be traded to Smackdown Live.
This way you don’t have to see Big Cass completely squash Enzo, it leaves the door open for a reunion in the future, and it gives Amore a fresh start to try something new over on the blue brand, and give Cass the opportunity to create his own identity on his own.
Enzo is a great entertainer, there’s no doubt about that. He’s one of the best talkers on the mic in the industry today, and sure, his in ring ability is somewhat limited in comparison to others, but Xavier Woods is proof of being able to get by without having the wrestling ability to match the top guys.
Amore could certainly improve in the ring, and in some aspects he’s still very much in the learning process, but fans will continue to get behind him.
If I were to pair him in a feud with anyone in the WWE right now, it’d be The Miz. Firstly, being THE biggest Miz fan I have to hand plaudits to the fact he can put absolutely anyone over, and Daniel Bryan, AJ Styles and Dean Ambrose are receipts of that (granted Styles was mega over before WWE).
Secondly, can you imagine the back and forths on the mic those two would have? It’d be highly entertaining, and being the ultimate wrestling villain (a character he portrays perfectly), the fans would be with Enzo every step of the way.
All these things are just thoughts, concerns and ponders for the time being. WWE may want to go in a completely different direction and move Cass to Smackdown, or keep them both where they are.
Big Cass will do just fine on his own, whereas in the case of Enzo, without the 7ft tall holding him up, it’s very much sink or swim time.
