Welcome back to the new NXT Revisited column here on SLTD Wrestling. This week featured a lot of the people we don’t normally see on NXT. There was no Corey Graves, no MOjo Rawley (yay!), no Sami Zayn, no Bo Dallas and no Tyler Breeze (save for some brief backstage segments).
Instead we got Aiden English, Colin Cassaday, Ascension, and CJ Parker along with some unkonwn guys. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not in any way complaining. With the limited team scale of NXT compared to Raw, not everyone gets on every show. So it’s a necessity that we spread the wealth here. If they focus too much on the same people every week, it will get stale (I’m looking at you Mojo “John Cena” Rawley).
Spotlight Please!
I’m a big fan of both these guys. Aiden English is the kind of cocky heel that usually does well to generate heat in front of big crowds. Think Damien Sandow before he was thrown in the garbage for whatever reason, and Big Cass has a catchphrase that makes people want to chant along. The spelling out of Sawft is infectious, and I’d like to see how it gets on in front of a much larger audience. Couple that with Cass’ look and you have the makings of a potentially successful character on the main roster in years to come.
The match between the two was equal parts physical and psychological. English played the cowardly heel getting in the cheap shots while avoiding confrontation where possible and won with a roll up and a handful of tights. Cass played the big guy, ala Sheamus or Cesaro using as much power as he could to try and overcome Aiden English. Simple, yes. Short, yes. Effective, absolutely!
THIS is the Paige we need
I mentioned in this weeks Raw Revisited (which you can read here) that Paige needs to be more like her NXT character instead of this timid character she seems to be portrayed as since debuting the night after Wrestlemania. The interview she gave to Tom Phillips here, and the promo video that played before it should really be featured on Raw next week so that viewers can see what Paige is really all about because she is awesome and should not change ONE BIT!
Camac-who?
If you are dead set on making Camacho relevant now, the worst thing you can do is put him in a feud with Adam Rose. This is for a number of reasons:
- Adam Rose is fresh and new, and super hot right now, so there is no way he is losing.
- Rose is on his way to the main roster so he won’t be on NXT for much longer anyway.
- Camacho is terrible and doesn’t need screen time when other people are sitting backstage with more talent in their baby finger.
Also, why would they have Oliver Grey (a former NXT tag team champion) come back from injury and lose a squash match? Flawed logic, at its worst.
What Are We Doing With The Ascension?
I liked the Ascension more in their original form with Conor O’Brian and Kenneth Cameron being the two guys, and the music and entrance that reminded me so much of The Undertaker. This watered down version with terrible music and an even more terrible Rick Victor. They are still the best (and only?) tag team in the division on NXT right now and I have to believe that this whole “squash every nameless tag team out there” thing they keep doing is leading to them getting challenged by legitimate contenders.
Whether that’s existing people on the roster or 2 new people looking to make a name for themselves remains to be seen, but it needs to happen soon!
Oh Yay, It’s The Great Khali
In case it wasn’t clear, the title of this section is very sarcastic. I am not a Great Khali fan, nor have I ever been. Is anyone? So when I see him in NXT once again taking valuable minutes from more deserving superstars it makes me angry. When Tyler Breeze gets a 15 second interview segment and Khali gets a 5+ minute match to squash another up and comer in CJ Parker, colour me even more enraged.
Big thumbs up to the crowd though for a “Global Warming” chant though, you guys make me happy during the dark times.
Who and Who vs Who and Who?
All I could picture watching this match was “Wow, someone just created 3 wrestlers in WWE 2K14 using the basic templates”. These guys are all so cookie cutter and boring (apart from Baron Corbin) that I honestly found it hard to get interested. I perked up when Corbin hit that massive clothesline but I quickly realised that he was one of the guys with no entrance or music so he was going to be on the receiving end of a loss at the hands of the United Colours Of Boring.
At least it was the giant Crash Holly guy that ate the pin. Keep an eye out for Baron Corbin because he was hella impressive!
Brodus Got His Main Event!
First things first; Brodus Clay’s legs are not meant for HD. They’re just not. Now that that’s out of the way, while I am not a fan of Brodus’, this feud with Adrian Neville has the potential to be a very David vs Goliath style affair. Big man vs Underdog is always reliable to deliver some good matches but it is really dependant on the ability of both men to deliver in them. Adrian Neville has no problem in that department, but I have some concerns about Brodus. He’s still a bit rough around the edges and has lost some of the athleticism that he used to have as The Funkasauras. Chlk it up to ring rust I guess, but he needs to improve for this feud to deliver great matches.
The result, which saw Neville just climb into the ring in time to beat a 10 count makes sense. You don’t want Neville (the smaller man) to pin Brodus right out the gate. You also don’t want Brodus to win too easily. The count out victory allows Neville to keep his momentum as champion while giving Brodus a legitimate reason to want to continue the feud and go after a shot at the NXT championship.
That’s gonna do it for this week’s NXT Revisited. Be sure to like, comment and share as much as possible and get the word out there so we can be good buddies!
Peace!
