This past Thursday evening was the third annual birthday treat for my boy child to go watch the guys of Welsh Wrestling perform at a local venue. In the previous two years, myself and the boy have both thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, so expected nothing less for this event, and here’s how it all went down.
Match 1 – Grizz vs Titan
I for one didn’t expect a match of this calibre to open the show. Grizz is well known in the South Wales/South West wrestling scene and is doing pretty damn well for himself, and Titan is a former Welsh Wrestling Champion. Surprisingly for the majority in attendance there were a few of us Grizz fans there, which I suspect Grizz secretly likes, and Titan as always is super over with the fans. The match itself was a hard hitting contest that could have gone either way, but it was the lean, mean Grizz who finally got the better of the former champ.
Match 2 – Sterling Gold Esq vs The Big Dog
From my old memory, this is the first time both of these have appeared as the shows i’ve been at. Sterling Gold played the perfect “Better than you” heel, and even kept in character during the meet and greet when I said to him he just needs the multi-coloured pants and he’d be a ringer for Jack Gallagher….then went down like a lead balloon haha. Big Dog had the classic fan involvement entrance and in a classic small man/big man match, used his massive size advantage to well in lack of a better term advantage. This was a fun, comedy type of wrestling match that was really appreciated by the crowd. Big Dog ended up as the victor.
Match 3 – Welsh Wrestling Title Match – Stevie Starr (c) vs Eddie Ryan
Two guys with excellent credentials. For those that don’t know, Stevie Starr had a stint in WWE Developmental during 2012 so had some excellent training over there, and Eddie Ryan, has wrestled for promotions such as 4FW, SEW, and Chaos Wrestling. This match was match of the evening and both men showed they have wrestled some excellent talents in the past. The match ebbed and flowed, and Eddie called to take the title to England with him, but alas a Super Kick followed by an RKO put paid to Ryan’s challenge to Starr.
At this point we had a small interval where it was announced that Welsh Wrestling would return for two dates next year, which is awesome stuff, it’s been a long time coming, but they’ll sell out each and every time they hit Cwmbran. We were also told of a backstage altercation that would result in a tag team main event, no other details were provided.
Match 4 – Kade Callous vs Kid Cymru
It’s no secret that i’m a fan of Kade Callous’ and his mentally unstable gimmick, but with him adding makeup to his appearance just freaked the crowd up even more, which I couldn’t help but laugh along with. Kid Cymru is almost as over as Titan, and with the Welsh gimmick he should be in Wales, and his Martial Arts style almost caused KC to have his lights out on more than one occasion. In the end the unpredictable Kade Callous finally nailed his finishing sequence, ending with an F5 for the victory. The majority of the crowd weren’t happy, but he I laughed along with KC. (We really need those Callous Coalition T-Shirts to get out there for April).
Main Event – Stevie Starr & Titan vs Grizz & Eddie Ryan
So it turned out the altercations were between Stevie & Eddie and Grizz & Titan, so the powers that be booked this tag team main event. This was your usual send the crowd home happy main event, and in a treat for the ladies, poor Eddie Ryan has his backside revealed. The faces went over the heels and everyone was happy. Also Grizz got another decent reaction so Guwon Grizz!
After the show it was time for the meet and greet where all proceeds made by purchasing this meet and greet went to Welsh Wrestling’s chosen anti-bullying charity, Kidscape. There’s always a big queue to meet the wrestlers of the evening, and it’s worth every penny when you see the kids faces light up by getting an autograph and if they choose a photo with the wrestlers, and even the hardest of heels make an effort for the fans!
For those in attendance we were also lucky enough to be present for the recording of the show for when Welsh Wrestling airs on S4C and Bay TV, for what i’m told is set for 2017. As ever the entertainment provided by everyone involved in the process was top notch, so I look forward to bringing the boy back to see you guys in April, so as always thank you for all the effort the Welsh Wrestling team put into the shows for our entertainment.
You can follow Welsh Wrestling on twitter and facebook to see if they’re running shows near you, as they do run shows outside of Wales you know. As always you can discuss wrestling with me on twitter at any point, so until next time readers, stay safe.
