During Survivor Series history we’ve seen a few stars in some random circumstances. We’ve seen CM Punk be me over than D-X, we’ve seen the Montresl Screw Job where Vince was made as a heel with one act, we’ve seen a debut of The Undertaker, and we’ve even seen the debut of the Shield, and who can forget a certain upstart called Rocky Maivia.
However, WWE’s recent track record of making new stars has been very hit and miss. Seth Rollins has been the biggest success of recent times, and they can’t really claim that they made AJ Styles a star as he was massive before coming to the company. Then we have the other two from The Shield that have been hit and miss at best so far, even though there is time for both, and for whatever reason they don’t want to pull the trigger on the likes of Bray Wyatt & Cesaro.
Now this Sunday, WWE have a perfect opportunity to make themselves a new star without having to do a great deal. Following The Undertaker’s appearance on Smackdown and his warning to Team Smackdown that failure would result in them dealing with The Deadman himself, there’s been a clamouring on Social Media for AJ Styles vs Undertaker, now as special as that could be, they’d be missing a massive opportunity on making a new star.
Here is a theoretical scenario which would make a new star. It’s Team Raw vs Team Smackdown, we’re down to WWE Champion AJ Styles against Universal Champion Kevin Owens & United States Champion Roman Reigns. AJ is causing all kinds of mayhem, then through the crowd comes a disgruntled Baron Corbin. He lays out the Smackdown Champion allowing Raw to pick up the win. Phase one complete.
Phase two would start on Smackdown. Corbin would say that he cost Team Smackdown the match as the injury that kept him out of the match was just a cover story in order for Shane McMahon to get another shot in the limelight at the expense of a future main eventer. Following Undertakers warning on Smackdown, this sets up a match for Wrestlemania…but first Corbin would go through Shane at TLC, and then a returning John Cena at the Royal Rumble. This would give Corbin super momentum, and even a defeat to Taker wouldn’t make his star wane after a solid 5 month push like that.
It’s pretty damn unlikely that this will go down, and it’s just as unlikely that WWE will pull on a trigger and make a new star at an event that has some history in making new stars, or new stars debuting, but this scenario certainly gives us an excellent “What if” idea doesn’t it?
