Previewing the Lucha World Cup

Beginning on Friday, June 3rd and continuing through Sunday, June 5th, AAA will hold the 2nd annual Lucha World Cup in Mexico City. The tournament consists of trios teams from around the world. This year’s tournament consists of 8 men’s teams, the same as last year’s, but will also consist of a woman’s tournament consisting of 4 teams. The 2015 tournament was won by the Mexican “Dream Team” of Rey Mysterio Jr., Alberto El Patron, and Myzteziz. Mysterio is back with 2 new partners trying to take the Cup, as El Patron signed with WWE and Myzteziz is with the rival Mexican promotion CMLL.

Now to preview the men’s favorites.

The obvious favorites have to be the Mexican International team of Rey Mysterio Jr., Dr. Wagner Jr. and promising Lucha Underground star Dragon Azteca Jr. Mysterio hasn’t been seen on AAA television since October due to monetary issues and a win would probably be a “make-up” decision by the company to keep in Rey’s good graces. A win would solidify Rey’s legendary status in Mexico and give the relatively new Dragon Azteca a BIG rub in Mexico. I expect them to beat the Mexican Legends side of Canek, La Parka, and Blue Demon Jr. Only because Blue Demon Jr. never loses in Mexico, but only to Rey. A semifinal appearance should come to the home promotion’s side, Team AAA. They might have the best young talent in the tournament, led by AAA Heavyweight Champion Texano Jr. and his likely #1 contender for the title Pentagon Jr. Psycho Clown rounds out the roster, but there has to be some drama between Texano and Pentagon. A lot of people consider Pentagon the next AAA champ, possibly by the end of the summer and Texano can’t be happy about that. Rounding out the favorites should be Team Lucha Underground. AAA and Lucha Underground have a talent agreement, so putting over the LU guys in round one seems like a given. The roster consists of Cage, Chavo Guerrero Jr. and Johnny Mundo. All 3 have grievances with each other and I’d expect this union to blow up in the semifinals as well.

The women’s tournament is stacked as all 4 rosters, Team Canada, Team Japan, Team Mexico and Team USA all have a realistic shot at going over. I’m predicting Team Mexico, Faby Apache, Lady Apache, and Mari Apache to go over Team Canada, AAA Women’s Champion Taya, Allie, and K.C. Spinnelli. Whichever of the Apaches go over, it should be on Taya, the only one from Team Canada that is a AAA regular, and that should be your next AAA women’s program going forward. There is a crooked ref in AAA that favors Taya in every one of her matches, he is quite smitten with her and really who could blame him?!?! He’ll ref the final, get “knocked out” and another Mexican ref will likely come in to make the count. At least that’s what I’m predicting. Team Japan consists of Aja Kong, Yuki Miyazaki and Sumire Natsu. Team USA is a major darkhouse because of their immense international talent. The 3 ladies on the team have traveled everywhere and deserve a lot of respect. Outside of the women in WWE, they might be the 3 best women’s wrestlers in the world. They are Santana Garrett, Cheerleader Melissa, and Sienna.

All in all, this will be a fantastic weekend of Lucha Libre. It won’t be available on traditional PPV, but you can purchase it through iPPV through the AAA website.
