Should WWE Forget About Sting vs Undertaker?

Having not made the jump to the WWE until last year, Sting has missed out on some mouth-watering dream matches over the years. From Shawn Michaels to The Rock, there’s been a number of WWE stars that have missed out on the opportunity to go toe to toe with the Stinger. However, the big match that wrestling fans around the world has been wanting to see is Sting go one-on-one with the Undertaker in an epic encounter at Wrestlemania. With Sting signing with the company in 2014 and considering Undertaker’s probably close to calling it a day on his career, it seems that these two are destined to clash. However, should this dream match between Undertaker and Sting actually happen?

This article comes after Jim Ross recently updated the Q&A section of his blog. One of the questions he answers is about Undertaker vs Sting potentially happening at Wrestlemania 32. This was his response:

“I think that we can forget about Sting vs. Taker. All storylines in the biz can be simpler and more logical and it would make me happier. Plus, paying more attention to continuity would be smart on their part as well.”

However, you can see why the fans would be so interested in this match that they wouldn’t mind putting the logic aside just to see these two legends go at it.

On paper, this match would seem like the perfect fit with these two similar characters. Undertaker and Sting have had some of the greatest character developments in wrestling history, having been through so much change in order to make them who they are today. Both of these characters were the embodiment of darkness for their respective companies back in their prime. Undertaker was the lord of darkness while Sting was the lone wolf of WCW in the war with the nWo. Therefore, it would seem like a no brainier to have both men clash on the biggest show of the year. In any other year, Undertaker vs Sting would be the talk of the town. However, we are in 2015 and a lot has changed.

Undertaker and Sting are now both at least 50 years old. Since the start of 2011, Undertaker has wrestled a grand total of NINE matches in the WWE. Undertaker’s health has been up in the air for years. Whether it’s collapsing at the end of his matches with Brock Lesnar or being stretchered away following matches with Triple H, it seems Undertaker’s health and well-being has always came into question. Meanwhile, Sting has proven to be one of the most well conditioned wrestlers in the business today. Even in 2013, Sting was still able to pull off a full-time schedule with TNA. He was still able to pull off great main events against the likes of Austin Aries. Sting can still go in the ring but keep this in mind… he’s still 56 years old. Is it too late for this match to go down and should WWE forget about it?

It may seems that the stars are aligned well enough for this legendary match to be fulfilled but it’s very difficult to judge just how great match this could actually be. Firstly, we don’t know what the chemistry will be like as the two of them have never wrestled each other before. Remember how Undertaker’s match with Bray Wyatt at Wrestlemania 31 went down. It may have seemed great on paper but the chemistry was off between the two of them and that made the match itself a little disappointing. If we’re thinking about Undertaker’s last match, it should be up against somebody we know he can pull off a good match with. The pressure on Sting would be immense.

Secondly, the size differences could effect the match-up as well. That’s never really been a problem for the Undertaker in the past as his matches with Shawn Michaels and CM Punk have demonstrated. However, the size of Michaels and Punk are very different to Sting as well. Sting cannot move as well as Michaels and Punk could against the Undertaker. That’s nothing against Sting. If Sting wrestled Undertaker back in 1996, things would be completely different. But again… this is 2015.

Lastly, the idea of Sting vs Undertaker being Undertaker’s last match doesn’t seem to be a logical way for Undertaker to go. JR makes a good point when he talks about paying more attention to continuity and story-telling. From a story-telling perspective, what on earth could possibly lead to the Undertaker and Sting fighting at Wrestlemania. You could potentially have Undertaker cost Sting the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Night of Champions, leading into their match at Wrestlemania. However, there’s still unfinished business left between Brock Lesnar and Undertaker. It would seem out of character for Brock Lesnar to just forget about Undertaker and it would be a little disappointing for Undertaker’s feud with Lesnar to end like it did at Summerslam. That’s sort of the reason why I’m convinced that we’re going to see a third match between Undertaker and Brock Lesnar at Wrestlemania instead of Taker vs Sting. I truly feel that the company did a great job in laying the foundations for a third match if that’s their plan for Wrestlemania. Lesnar and Taker still have reasons to fight each other while Sting has no real reason to fight Taker at all. Other than the scenario we just threw out there, it would seem very strange that Undertaker would just show up to fight Sting.

Believe me, I’m a sucker for these types of dream matches. There’s so many matches that I’ve wanted to see happen that will probably never happen. For years, I’ve wanted to see Undertaker and Sting battle at Wrestlemania. But from a storyline perspective and from a health perspective, a match between these two would nowhere near be to the level that we were expecting. Remember when WWE delivered the “dream match” of Brock Lesnar and Goldberg at Wrestlemania 20? Perhaps not ALL of the great dream matches we think of should become reality. I would much prefer that WWE stuck to continuity when taking the end of the Undertaker into account. The final chapter of Brock Lesnar and Undertaker saga sounds way more appealing than Undertaker vs Sting I being Taker’s last chapter in wrestling.

Anyway, I hope that read OK. It was literally just an idea that came today after seeing what JR said about the match.
