SLTD Discuss: Goldberg – Hall of Fame (@SLTDWrestling)

Once again Team SLTD have gotten together to give our thoughts on this year’s Hall of Fame inductee Goldberg!

We all give our thoughts below, let us know in the comments below what you think of one of this year’s inductee’s!

As always, if you like any of our writer’s opinions just roll over their name to follow them on twitter, and their blog name for more of their work.

Goldberg, for his work in the wrestling business, was a sure-fire eventual name for the Hall of Fame. His reputation and status within WCW alone would have been enough to warrant a place, but his original WWE run was a lot of fun and provided moments we never thought we’d see. His undefeated streak still goes down as one of pro wrestling’s greatest, and despite in my opinion the unrealistically over the top booking of his last WWE run (2016/2017), his reputation remains untarnished and will go down as one of the biggest stars of the industry.

Goldberg was one of few wrestlers who emerged from WCW as a recognised, homegrown talent. During his time in WCW, he was pushed as a singles wrestler and a monster. His streak has been the basis for gimmicks and he spawned imitations of his character too. The streak, which ran from Sept 1997 to Dec 1998, saw Goldberg get as much momentum as any non-nWo wrestler in the company at that time.

After the streak was ended, he fought over the WCW Tag Titles, US and Heavyweight Titles, along with appearing in (what is my greatest movie of all time) Ready 2 Rumble. When WCW was bought out by WWE, Goldberg headed out to AJPW, before his first run in WWE.

His first run in WWE was poorly booked. It started well with feuds with The Rock and Chris Jericho, but then he started going up against the then leader of Evolution, Triple H. In this feud, the mystery and aura of Goldberg was destroyed. He held the Heavyweight Championship for 84 days, but his losses and shortcomings against Triple H hurt him. His match vs Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania XX should have gone down in history as Beast vs Titan, but due to both wrestlers leaving WWE, the crowd was as interested as that as in Al Snow match. His second run in WWE was far better and booked how it should have been vs Triple H in his first run. He was strong, he was rampant, he conquered all comers.

Goldberg is Hall of Fame worthy, both for his actions in WCW and WWE. His streak is still the streak to beat (here’s looking at you Asuka!) and his career is one that has stood the test of time. Just don’t mention tasers around him.

Goldberg being announced for the HOF is just fantastic. From his incredible win streak to his return to the WWE, his career is just amazing. When I was little, I remember watching him just destroy people. It was mind-blowing that he couldn’t lose. I remember the first match that I ever saw Goldberg in, it was Goldberg vs Raven for the US title. He dominated Raven and won the title. To this day, I still watch that match from time to time. I’m so happy that Goldberg is now permanently apart of wrestling history.

Goldberg is a worthy inductee into the Hall of Fame for a few reasons but mostly as one of the only guys in wrestling that was a star in WCW, made the jump to WWE… and the formula seemingly never changed. He was the exact same killing machine when he started in WCW and, more so in 2016/2017, continued to decisively and quickly beat all in his path like a true star. He carried an intensity and a presence which was so simple and effective at the same time and his in-ring work made him a star attraction.

He wasn’t neutered by the WWE-style, although he did come close during his 2003 run (for example, being pinned by Triple H and then having boring twenty-minute main-events with him). But his character survived the strains of time, which is hard to do at a time where more is expected from the wrestlers by its fans. He still serves as this superhero-like character to children which is exactly the type of character that a character should have. Goldberg being the headliner of the 2018 Hall of Fame is OK with me!

GOLDBERG GOLDBERG! The man who would have saved WCW. The man who beat Brock in a minute, damn Goldberg deserves to be in the HOF. Sure his career wasn’t as long as it should have been. But the drawing power he had, not only in the days of Nitro but also during his brief return in 2016/17. The man who got beaten up backstage by Chris Jericho definitely deserves to be in the HOF.

@runner_rope (The Rope Runner)
Before his return in 2016, I didn’t really see the hype around him. However, after he demolished Brock Lesnar in 86 seconds, I saw why he is regarded as the greatest WCW Champion. He may not do much in the ring, but every move he does has force and impact behind it. Also, he is the most Badass man on the planet over the age of 50. He deserves to go in the WWE hall of fame despite only being in WWE for six months.

@Tybo_SLTD (Tybo Talks)
I’ll be honest I wouldn’t call myself a Goldberg fan when I was younger, a huge part of this is that I was not a WCW fan. The one thing that seems important is that I was aware of Goldberg and his undefeated streak, even without watching the show. Goldberg was also the only WCW wrestler I knew who was never in WWE. When someone is bigger than the company they work for, I think that’s a good starting point to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Fast-forward a few years to Goldberg in the WWE, and my most dominant memory is Goldberg completely owning everyone in his first Elimination Chamber match (even punching through the bulletproof plexiglass)

Goldberg was never the greatest wrestler in the world, and he never claimed to be but his success is undeniable. He knew his gimmick inside out from day one. He was a big, strong, machine who went all out (for about 90 seconds) and got the fans into a frenzy. He was exactly what WCW needed to stay in the Monday Night Wars.

I wonder if Goldberg has the shortest cumulative time spend actually wrestling out of everyone in the Hall of Fame?
