SLTD Predicts – Kevin Owens vs Roman Reigns

We are well under way with SLTD Wrestling’s #RumbleWeek, and by now I’m sure you all know what we do.

Once again Team SLTD have gotten together to give our thoughts on who we think will win the match for the WWE Universal Championship, Kevin Owens vs Roman Reigns

We all give our thoughts below, give them a read and then tell us what you think.

The odds are in favour for Reigns here so I’m predicting a Owens win, The Champion has to win here to show he can do it on his own as the Universal Champion! Can they really put Reigns in the main event of Mania for the 3rd year in a row and not get any backlash I think not! I’m a fan of Reigns but I’m a bigger fan of Owens as champ and long may he Reign… Pun intended!

@maruwe22 (What Would Matt Do?)
For me this one will go down the line and could go so far as to shape the rest of the PPV and WrestleMania too. On the one hand, with Owens getting the win you could see Chris Jericho winning the Rumble and having Friend vs Friend at WrestleMania. You could see Reigns getting the win after Jericho turns on Owens mid match. You could even see a screw job finish. This match is far too close to put a safe bet on, but if I were to put a name in the hat to be walking out with the belt, it’d be Kevin Owens

The build up to Roman Reigns challenging Kevin Owens for the WWE Universal Championship at the Royal Rumble has been outstanding. Chris Jericho has been Owens’ Ace up the sleeve for a while now when it comes to retaining his title. Now, on Sunday, we have Chris Jericho being suspended high above the ring in a shark cage as a “sexy piñata”. This can only mean one thing, if Reigns does not win, he will have no excuse to use in the failure.

This being said, I predict that all signs indicate that Roman Reigns is going to win the Universal Championship and is going to defend the title against the winner of the Royal Rumble at Wrestlemania.

When it comes to both main title matches at this Sunday’s Royal Rumble my heart is telling me one thing, but my head is telling me another. I think it’s always smarter to bet with my head, so it’s with deep regret that I think Roman Reigns wins the Universal title this Sunday. I think we see the possibility of Jericho accidentally costing Owens the match. I think there could be a point in the match where both Reigns and Owens are down in the centre of the ring and Jericho drops down his coveted list. KO tries to use it as a weapon, he runs at Reigns, who ducks out of the way and hits a Spear to get the win. Jericho looking on in disbelief at his own list played a part in costing his best friend their WWE Universal Title.

Simply put Reigns… WWE are so adamant to make him the next Cena, that they are going to give him another big WrestleMania moment.

I have a scenario in my head about how the Universal title picture will look by WrestleMania and unfortunately, that title picture features neither of these men. With that said, what’s important is protecting the outgoing so when he loses the title, it’s a big deal. As much as I like Roman Reigns, with this idea in mind, it makes no sense for Roman to win the title for a short title reign. Owens retains due to interference from Braun, leading to Roman vs Braun at the Rumble.

This year more than ever, the Royal Rumble PPV as a whole could dictate the whole landscape of the ‘Road to Wrestlemania’. Kevin Owens has sunk the RAW ratings for long enough as the Universal Champion, and it’s about time he dropped the title.
I’m not sure Roman Reigns is THE guy to do it, but I think WWE know they need a big name attraction to be holding to the title going into Wrestlemania. I see throughout the event Jericho & Owens kick-starting the feud to their presumed match at Wrestlemania itself. A Reigns win wouldn’t go over will with the majority of the crowd, however, from a booking standpoint it’d be a wise move.

This match between Fight Owens Fight and Roman “The Guy” Reigns might not be as easy to predict as you think. On one hand, Roman dropped the U.S. Title to Y2J quite recently, freeing him up to win the Universal Title at the Royal Rumble. This would inevitably lead to either Braun Strowman or The Undertaker winning the rumble itself, and facing Reigns at WrestleMania.

The other side of this is the rivalry that will develop between Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens, where Owens retains the Universal Title and faces the winner of the Royal Rumble – that being Chris Jericho. This is a match and feud that will no doubt be very entertaining both in and out of the ring as these guys have great chemistry. Ultimately, I feel this feud can get traction without Jericho winning the Rumble, but would be more entertaining for the title.

As much as I’d like Kevin Owens to remain the Universal Champion, I think Roman Reigns walks out the winner. WWE are keen on the Reigns project still, which may still pay dividends. But it all depends on Roman’s opponent. As entertaining as Kevin Owens can be, his title reign has been overshadowed by Jericho’s excellence.
