Welcome once again to Tybo’s Talks! I am Tybo, and I’m sure by now you know that I am the ‘Five Star General’ of this operation we call SLTD Wrestling.
As it’s SummerSlam week, I have been watching some older SummerSlam PPVs and there is a theme that I have noticed. It seems crazy stipulations are pretty commonplace at the biggest party of the summer. So, I decided to compile some of my favorites.
Sit back and see how many of these you remember, and think are a good idea year’s later.
Love Her or Leave Her Match
Shane McMahon vs Test
Where better to start that with Shane McMahon himself. Long before Triple H and Stephanie were the power couple of WWE, Steph was ‘daddy’s little girl’ and started dating a young WWE upstart, Test. As you would expect the McMahon family didn’t like this especially Shane McMahon. (man, was Shane going to be annoyed by the end of the year)
These was only one way to settle this, in the ring. The match was made so that if Test couldn’t beat Shane, he was no longer allowed to date Stephanie. This all seems pretty standard for WWE. The fun didn’t stop there, after Test beat Shane and eventually got the blessing to marry Stephanie (does this feel really quick to anyone else?) Enter Triple H, a drive-thru wedding chapel and an unconscious Stephanie… but that’s another story.
Rest in Peace Match
Undertaker vs Giant Gonzales
The name of this match conjures up visions of casket matches, or buried alive matches or even worse! The undertaker is going to make someone actually Rest in Peace.
Unfortunately this was not the case, WWE were sketchy at best in the lead up to this one but when it came down to it, the match was basically no-disqualifications, and no-count outs. Which was more than a little disappointing.
Shockingly not as disappointing as the match, it’s fair to say Giant Gonzales wasn’t a great in ring technician, but this one was especially bad. The only saving grace being this match was over almost before it began.
Jailhouse Match
The Mountie vs Big Boss Man
Summer Slam 1991 is remembered by most for the ‘Match Made in Heaven’, that being the marriage of Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth. Most won’t remember that The Mountie and Big Boss Man fought in an underrated gem, with a very interesting stipulation.
In the first (and to my knowledge, only) Jailhouse Match, where the loser would spend the 24 after the match in a New Your Jail Cell (trying not to make an Uso’s joke) This was not only an interesting stipulation, but was made better by the great work from both Boss Man and Mountie, who worked their gimmicks to perfection. This was made even better by The Mountie’s reaction to getting carted off in handcuffs.
Till Death Do Us Part Match
Kane vs Matt Hardy
This match feels like someone was looking back at the Shane McMahon vs Test match earlier and thought, this would been great if it was more real, and ended up with this mental situation. So real life couple Matt and Lita were put in a storyline where Kane would get Lita pregnant, but Matt still wanted to be with her.
As you would expect this is the wrestling business so who would get to marry Lita would be decided in the ring, because what woman wants to use feeling to decide to either marry your long term boyfriend and make him raise a psychopaths child, or the just marry the actual psychopath.
This is not even mentioning the fact that Lita wasn’t happy about the pregnancy, there was no real mention of how she happened to get in that situation or (and let’s keep this light) if Lita optionally cheated on Matt with Kane. There are so many questions, that if we start digging for we would be in a place no-one wants to be in.
If you think that’s enough craziness, this all happened before Kane won and their wedding went ahead, until Trish interrupted, Snitsky kicked the baby and then the real life drama of Lita actually cheating on Matt with Edge.
Custody of Dominick Ladder Match
Ray Mysterio vs Eddie Guerrero
If you thought a stipulation to win a marriage was crazy, you ain’t seen nothing. In 2005 real life best friends Rey Mysterio and Eddie Guerrero fought in a classic gem of a ladder match with the winner get… a child.
If this was in WCW it would have been ‘Dominick on a pole match’.
The story goes that Mysterio’s 8 year old son, is actually Eddie’s biological son, and he wants him back. But wait, this is the WWE not only does Eddie want custody just to hurt Mysterio but he wants a ladder match with custody papers hanging from the rafters… obviously!
Now, despite the ridiculous stipulation on this one, the match as you would expect was a classic. Both guys did everything to sell this to the fans, Eddie’s heel work is nothing short of perfection not just in the ring but the whole build-up and after the match, he makes you believe this stipulation make complete sense.
