#TeamSLTD – Favorite Royal Rumble Match

We are SLTD Wrestling are all huge fans of the Royal Rumble, and the beginning of the ‘Road To Wrestlemania’. So we thought it would be a great idea to all get together and talk about our favourite Royal Rumble Match in its long and storied history.

Make sure after you have read our favourite Royal Rumbles you add yours below.

@Dan_089 (Twitter Manager) So I’m going to say my favourite Royal Rumble match Was 1995 HBK winning, just the fact he started at 1, and the way it ended had you on the edge of your seat.. Bulldog thinking he’s won and HBK hanging on for Dear life, also I’m a huge HBK Mark!!

@TomRobinson5199 (Armbar Analysis) I’m a huge fan of the Royal Rumble and having watched this one back recently, I feel so compelled to go with the 2007 Royal Rumble. This was everything you could possibly want in a Royal Rumble match. This was one of the better years of the Royal Rumble in regards to both star power and talent, as it truly did feel special with RAW, SmackDown! and ECW stars battling for a title shot at Wrestlemania. The last fifteen minutes really stood out as it was booked incredibly well. The Great Khali dominating by eliminating seven men made him look like a legitimate monster. Undertaker running wild when he entered the match got a huge reaction. Randy Orton and Edge working together to take out two legends in Undertaker and Shawn Michaels made them looked like such great heels in front of this Texas crowd. Michaels eliminating Edge and Orton got an insane pop as it came down to HBK and the Dead Man. Finally, the final two with these two Texas legends was played out beautifully as it was simply vintage Undertaker and Shawn Michaels. I could list a number of great moments in this match but I will never forgot the closing moments and I’m sure a lot of wrestling fans will feel the same way.

@ALFarrand (PPV Rewind) I remember going into the Royal Rumble with a lot of anticipation. At the time, ECW had been a third brand for about six months, Triple H was out of action with another quadriceps injury and, for the first time ever, the Royal Rumble winner could choose between the WWE Championship, World Heavyweight Championship or ECW Championship.

This Rumble match had everything you’d come to expect from the format (minus surprise entrants) with the inclusion of weapons. Sabu set tables up upon entry only to be choke slammed through one during his elimination at the hands of Kane. The final four were Edge, Randy Orton, Shawn Michaels and Undertaker, the four men who had to have been seen as front-runners going into the match.

In the end it came down to Shawn Michaels and Undertaker. The final moments between HBK and Taker were almost like a mini-match. Lots of drama and story telling which Sheamus and Chris Jericho attempted to replicate in 2012 but to a poorer effort. The Michaels/Undertaker finale reminded me of how great a Rumble match really can be. Undertaker became the first man to enter at number 30 and win, then going on to face Batista at Wrestlemania 23 for the World Heavyweight Championship.

@WWETOWNnation (YouTube Manager) I’d have to go with 2007. Not only did it have a good roster, separate brands actually a thing, draft actually been a thing and most of all The Undertaker winning the Royal Rumble match who is my ALL TIME Favourite superstar, but the matches except from the Royal Rumble match were great too. Just to name another match on the card, it was John Cena vs Umaga for the WWE Championship in a Last Man Standing match… can’t we just go back to those days??

@CallumOwen98 (Facebook Manager) – Over the past few weeks I’ve been re-watching some Royal Rumble matches, and although I believe the 2007 Rumble match was the best finish to a Rumble match with quite potentially the best two wrestlers ever in Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker, I feel the year following to 07 was the best ever Rumble, because of numerous reasons, firstly because it was held in Madison Square Garden, which I firmly believe is the most historic wrestling arena in the world, so immediately it ups the anti of the match, secondly the first two entrants were none other than Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker. Throughout the match there was that one big name in the match the whole way through, but also new stars were made by the performances of CM Punk, John Morrison and Mr Kennedy. However it was the final 4 that makes the rumble in my opinion, and the final 4 were Triple H, John Cena, Kane and Batista. Perhaps aside from Kane each man had a true chance and good reason to win, Triple H was the pre-match favourite, Batista a former winner, then the return that shook Madison Square Garden to its core of John Cena who tore his rotator cuff just 3/4 months prior to the event wasn’t even expected back in time for Wrestlemania, showed his recovery powers as he came back and eliminated Triple H to cement his return and his first Rumble victory.

@Ciaran_1986 (Write Legend Write) The beauty of the Royal Rumble match is that, more often than not, fans just do not have a clue what is coming next. Nobody is really certain who will triumph as the victor. Fans are unsure of who the next person to walk through the curtain and enter the Rumble will be. We’ve had women enter the match, seen tag alliances break up, and even seen injured stars make amazing comebacks in time for the Rumble.

There are plenty of other shocking entrants in the Royal Rumble too, including guys who’ve been away from the company making a shocking return at the beginning of WrestleMania season. The WWE has a real track record of providing fans with shocks at the Royal Rumble, and with the 2016 Rumble approaching this Sunday, here is one of my most memorable moments of the Royal Rumble.

The final four was Triple H, Randy Orton, Ted Dibiase and Cody Rhodes. So Triple H against Randy’s Legacy stable. They teamed up on him to the point where Triple H was helpless as Randy Orton slapped him around the face. Triple H countered the RKO by shoving him into the turnbuckle. He hit a face buster on Rhodes followed by a Spine buster on Dibiase. Randy Orton nearly got eliminated, but he hung on. Triple H hit a Pedigree to Rhodes, he threw Dibiase out. He threw Rhodes out. Then Randy gave HHH the final insult and eliminated from the Rumble. After 48 minutes of action the ‘Legend Killer’ took his place at Wrestlemania 25. What made this Rumble even more significant was the very personal feud that played out between Randy & Triple H leading to WM following the Rumble. Plus on top of everything that happened, we were treated to arguably one of the worst Wrestlemania main events in recent history.
