Alberto Del Rio had been one of my favourite wrestlers in WWE for years. I saw a lot in Del Rio which I don’t think many people did. His wrestling skill was exceptional and he was not too bad on the microphone either. He’s certainly a lot better on the stick than the majority of the main roster and provided a lot of value to the company. However, following a backstage incident and a huge drop down the card, Del Rio was released by the company.
Since then, Del Rio’s worked for a number of wrestling companies around the world as Alberto El Patron. From ROH to AAA, El Patron has become one of the biggest free agents in the wrestling industry. El Parton has also been able to compete in the incredibly popular Lucha Underground television show. In fact, El Patron had initially been confirmed for the second season of Lucha by one of it’s producers. However, El Patron disputed the producer’s claims with the tweet below…
It seems that the future of El Patron is really up in the air. It’s being speculated that El Patron most likely won’t be signing on for a second season. This does beg the question… where does El Patron go from here?
I actually started watching Lucha Underground a month or so ago. As of me writing this, Del Rio has just arrived to the company and is in his first feud with El Texano Jr. so I don’t know yet what his run in the first season was like overall. However, Lucha Underground has really just been a great show to watch. There’s a lot of potential with this second season if the network really go for it. Rey Mysterio’s also expected to be apart of the second season, which can really boost the show if he’s the star. If El Patron stays, then it’ll be a great coup for the program to keep him on board. If he’s done, then where does he go?
It should come as no surprise that TNA are desperate to sign up El Patron. They’ve been after him since he left WWE in August 2014 with the promise that he’d be the top star of the promotion. With the situation that TNA are in, I don’t think it’d be wise for El Patron to sign up with the company. Even if he’s the top star of the promotion, so what? It’s a very uneasy future for the company for everyone involved. It’s not worth the risk for El Patron when he can develop himself somewhere else.
New Japan Pro Wrestling is another top contender, wanting him as a top star for their promotion as well. I don’t think he’s actually had a lot of experience wrestling in Japan, so this might be a great chance for him to really shine and tangle with some tremendous talent.
WWE’s feelings towards Del Rio is that never really wanted to see him leave in the first place. PWInsider.com reported that the two sides are in negotiations. Reportedly, WWE’s looking for a top Hispanic star to promote with Rey Mysterio having left the company alongside Del Rio. There’s not a lot of wrestlers that can fill that roll, with the Lucha Dragons probably being the best they’ve got which isn’t saying much. Del Rio has become a top star in AAA and has been a top star in Mexico for some time. For WWE, this would be a gold-mine for audiences in that area of the world. However, is it really worth it for Del Rio to come back?
Last time Del Rio was at WWE, he wasn’t really going anywhere. He was in the main event of Money In The Bank 2014, but he was there along with seven other wrestlers. He was really just there to fill the numbers for that particular match. There was not a lot for Del Rio to do anyway and he was not even in a big match for that year’s Wrestlemania. I feel that it could happen to him again very quickly if he were to come back again.
I don’t think WWE would be as invested in Del Rio as they would be with the likes of the NXT stars. I think it would be great to see Del Rio up against those new stars coming in from NXT. However, it’s not really worth it if he’s just there to elevate those stars. I think there’s a lot more to him then just that.
I’d like to see him back in WWE but I think the best place for Del Rio… is Lucha Underground. I don’t know what the situation is that’s making Del Rio think twice. However, he can do that and still work in other companies like AAA which he had been doing before. I don’t think he’ll gain a lot from returning to WWE right now. I certainly don’t think he should be with TNA. NJPW might be an interesting one but I think it’d better if he re-signed with Lucha and continue doing the deal that he’s done in the last year.
