The Problem With Wyatts vs ECW At TLC

The storylines leading up to TLC have not really been up to par in comparisons to the last few pay-per-views. The Sheamus vs. Roman Reigns main event has been very underwhelming and the booking of the program with Charlotte and Paige has been all over the place. With that being said though, TLC should actually be an OK show.

TLC events usually are one of the better pay-per-views of the year for WWE, and this one should be no different. The triple threat tag team ladder match should be good. Kevin Owens vs. Dean Ambrose should be good. The chairs match between Alberto Del Rio and Jack Swagger. The TLC match itself might actually be good depending on how they book. The match which catches my eye though is the elimination tables match between the Wyatt Family and the ECW originals.

This catches my eye for a number of reasons. I feel that the match itself is going to be very fun with the Wyatt’s fitting the ECW style of wrestling. However, the match does actually bring up one of WWE’s biggest flaws at the moment. Despite having one of the most talented rosters they’e ever had, they are having to rely on old ECW stars to feud with the Wyatt’s.

In WWE’s eyes, there’s nobody else that they could throw in their with the Wyatt’s at TLC. In a time where they need to make new stars, their solution is to bring in old talent instead. I think I’m right in saying that it would cost WWE a lot more too to hire those guys for short-term deals then it would be to use one of their own.

Not going to lie. I’m a Tommy Dreamer fan. When Rhyno came out on RAW, I had a sheer mark-out moment. However, this also translated to me that this company is so thin in terms of star-power yet so huge in terms of actual talent. It’s like they’re saying “We can’t get our own stars over, so here are some old ECW guys.”

No disrespect to the ECW guys, but its not like any of these men were top main event talent when they were in WWE. The Dudley Boyz were huge stars in WWE but only as a tag team. Tommy Dreamer’s biggest claim to fame is an ECW title run in 2009 when ECW was at its lowest and Rhyno’s biggest feud was when he lost a feud with Chris Jericho in 2001.

The point is, if you’re going to bring up guys that were never truly top single stars in WWE, then why not take a chance on the younger talent?

There’s no reason why WWE couldn’t do a storyline where Neville and Kalisto join up with the Dudleyz for example. Those guys at least can get the endorsement from ECW legends like the Dudleyz and really bolster their position on the roster. It’s not like WWE have any long term plans with either Dreamer or Rhyno so why not take a chance?

Actually, even KANE would make sense from a storyline perspective. Now it might sound like a contradiction considering I just went on a big tirade about promoting young stars. However, Kane is still a less cheaper option than giving new deals to Dreamer and Rhyno. Kane is also a top star in his own right so at least the Wyatt’s get a bit more out of the match then just a win over some old ECW guys.

It’s astonishing how WWE goes out of it’s own way to make things harder for themselves when they already have the talent needed and this could be a great time to get those wrestlers over. I still feel that I’m really going to enjoy this match but it’s still disappointing that WWE are going with the mentality of out with the new and in with the old.
