Being an old man I can remember the glory years of the tag team division. No i’m not talking about the very good attitude era where there were teams such as The Dudley Boyz, Edge & Christian, The Hardy Boys, The APA and the like, I go further back than that, I can remember teams like The Hart Foundation, Demolition, Legion of Doom, The Bushwhackers, The Rockers etc.
In recent times there has been an outcry about the state of WWE’s tag team division, and I couldn’t really blame people for speaking out about it, however it seems things are coming full circle again and now the tag team division is looking at another boom period.
Lead by the awesome New Day trio we now also the veteran team of The Dudley Boyz, we have experienced heads in The Uso’s & The Colons, when they re-appear of course. Then we have some of the new guys that been called called up from NXT in The Vaudevillains and of course Enzo & Cass SAWFT, not to mention the recently debuting Anderson & Gallows. So that’s 7 teams that are now all plausible threats to hold the tag team titles, when was the last time that realistically happened? Perhaps as far back as 10 years ago?
The teams don’t stop there however, as in NXT they have two superb teams in The Revival & American Alpha, and that’s without mentioning randomly thrown together duo’s such as The Hype Bro’s and whoever else get’s thrown together.
Then of course we have a faction team like The Social Outcasts & The Wyatt Family, and not to mention teams that aren’t together for various reasons at this time such as The Lucha Dragons & The Ascension. When you add all this together and potentially throwing in a mix of teams from R-Truth, Tyler Breeze, Fandango & Goldust, company wide the Tag Division is looking very, very healthy.
Despite having the depth there to keep the WWE Tag Team division going along very nicely for the foreseeable future, will all this actually be put across how it should on TV, like it was back in the excellent times of days gone by? I can’t possibly say about that so that is over to the creative heads in WWE, however I really hope that the Tag Team division stays strong going forward as there will be too many missed opportunities ahead if they do.
