Howdy folks. The Voice of Reason back on SLTD Wrestling this week, and John Cena’s U.S. Open Challenge is also back with a bang this past week on Monday Night Raw. The open challenge has been great on so many levels, from surprise matches, to entertaining bouts as well as pure relevance for the United States Championship once again. The WWE have finally been utilising John Cena in the way that he should be at this stage in his career, and that is to elevate the mid-card.
So with the open challenge back in full swing, I thought it would be a good idea to run through a list of those who could not only feature in the U.S Open Challenge but at the same time, actually benefit from a worthwhile and fun feud with Cena. The list is also for potential competitors to be the next US Champ for when John Cena drops the title.
Rusev
Now Rusev has faced Cena a few times before, and Cena often gets blamed for the downfall that followed Rusev. I honestly think feuding with Cena can be good for an upcoming wrestler, but the most important part comes after the feud. Rusev has struggled because of lack of a viable feud after WrestleMania when Rusev dropped the title. Yes the feud with Ziggler was meaningful as Ziggler does not have a bad match, but the manor of the feud, dropping Lana, just did not fit with Rusev’s character.
Sometimes going back to square one is exactly what someone needs, and going back to the U.S Title, is exactly what Rusev needs to get back on track and taken a little more seriously. Not only that, the matches between these two have been solid in the past, and they have gotten even better since then. Interesting indeed.
King Barrett
Another person who in my opinion needs some gold, and a worthwhile feud with a main event star. Barrett has always had something about him that has made him special. He is great on the microphone, great in the ring, and plays a great heel. Again I think the situation here is that he just has not had something great to sink his teeth into and prove what he can really do on the main event stage.
We have seen Barrett face Cena before, back in the Nexus days and there is no doubt they could put on a hell of a show once again. I would honestly love to see Barrett come back, win a title that has some relevance again and gaining some main event spotlight again, rather than a strange feud with Neville that quite frankly does not make sense.
Roman Reigns
Now this may come as a surprise to some people, as Roman Reigns is not exactly struggling to gain a worthwhile opponent. His recent matches and story with Bray Wyatt has been excellent. They have really done well to keep this going on for a serious period of time as well as keeping it interesting for all of us. I would purely go for Roman for the entertainment factor. There is no doubt that the WWE want Reigns to takeover Cena’s role as the top babyface of the company, and I do not disagree. But if he is going to do that, then why not just put it into the story and give these guys a series of great matches.
Reigns would have to be heel of course, but I reckon he would get a better reception from the crowd than Cena would. While I do expect Roman to be in the hunt for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship soon, there is no reason why can’t pick up a mid-card title before he becomes the man. It will give Reigns good experience in the ring against Cena, and also show the WWE Universe that Reigns actually has a lot more to offer than people think. Just from what I see, there is wider move and skill set, and a bit more aggression too.
Dean Ambrose
Dean Ambrose definitely has this x factor that makes him very well liked. He is great on the microphone, can do a serious feud when he needs to, but also is very entertaining and very funny. Ambrose has held the U.S Title already, when he was a part of The Shield, and there is no reason he cannot go back to it. Ambrose should be doing a lot more than he is. Rollins holds the WWEWHC and the front man, with Roman looking to take that crown soon and having his own spouts with the Wyatt Family. Dean, is kind of jumping on with Reigns, kind of having his own matches, but nothing really worthwhile.
Don’t get me wrong, he has done a great job in everything he has done and been involved with. Even when he joined Reigns to take on the Wyatt Family, it made sense and was very good to watch. I just want to see Ambrose have his own spotlight, created for him. A feud with Cena, winning back the U.S. Title could do just that. I hope that there is something special planned for Ambrose soon.
What do you think? Who do you want to see face Cena in the United States Open Challenge?
