The Wrestling Brains (@xterblack and @callumowen98) are here again to predict the next round of matches in the 2019 King Of The Ring Tournament. We’re in the Quarter Final stages of the tournament now and this week both Raw & Smackdown host two matches that will thrust the winners into next week’s Semi-Finals which are taking place live from Madison Square Garden.
The brackets as they stand:
What Happened In The First Round?
Raw: So my Raw Bracket was ruined by Sami Zayn losing to Cedric Alexander and Baron Corbin beating Miz, both results on paper would’ve made sense, because of the underdog story of Ricochet also being similar to what’s being told with Cedric Alexander, in my opinion it’s not something that should be repeated especially on the same side of the bracket. And with Corbin going through, there’s a lot of concern that he’ll potentially win it all, so I wonder how much people will care if, in fact, he does become KOTR?
Match quality-wise, Ricochet Vs Drew was superb, and assuming Ricochet continues in this tournament I expect him to gain more momentum and popularity. Cedric Vs Zayn was the opposite to Drew Vs Ricochet, completely one-sided and it did no favours for Sami, perhaps his pairing with Nakamura will give him some relevance again.
Joe Vs Cesaro was everything it needed to be, a
Smackdown:In a complete turn on my own predictions, Elias defeated Kevin Owens to advance while Ali bested Buddy Murphy to do the same. I was correct in predicting that both Andrade and Chad Gable would defeat Apollo Crews and Shelton Benjamin respectively to advance.
Callum’s Raw Quarter-Final Predictions
Samoa Joe Vs. Ricochet
This tournament has only one final in my opinion and that is Ricochet Vs Andrade. Ricochet defeated Drew McIntyre in the first round, and I could see his underdog run continuing, in this
Baron Corbin Vs. Cedric Alexander
So using the standard face Vs heel dynamic, if Ricochet beats Samoa Joe, then Baron Corbin should beat Cedric Alexander to reach the semi
Both these men ruined my first round predictions, as I went for both of their opponents instead. This though should be an easy one to call, there’s no way I see Cedric beating Corbin, especially if that sets up a match against Ricochet, so providing Ricochet beats Joe, then Corbin will beat Alexander. Winner – Baron Corbin
Raw Semi Finals: Ricochet Vs Baron Corbin
Adam’s Smackdown Quarter Final Predictions
Elias Vs. Ali
As previously mentioned, had my predictions come off, this would have been Kevin Owens Vs. Buddy Murphy but alas, here we are. I can’t see Elias carrying on any further in this tournament and I feel Ali needs a little bit of momentum behind him especially since he had the rug pulled of under him with regards to the supposed Shinsuke Nakamura/Intercontinental Championship rivalry. Elias can carry on with the 24/7 Championship and being Shane McMahon’s enforcer/Kevin Owens’ punching bag in that ongoing feud. Winner: Ali
Chad Gable Vs. Andrade
As much as I would love to see Chad Gable take the win and have an absolute screamer of a match with Ali in the Semis next week, I think the safe money is on Andrade. Since his call up from NXT, Andrade has needed a championship or an accolade such as King Of The Ring to solidify/position him as a real heel threat on the Smackdown roster. I fully expect to see a Ricochet/Andrade final at Clash Of Champions so, for that reason, El Idolo is taking this one. Winner: Andrade
Smackdown Semi Finals: Ali Vs. Andrade
