Having dominated the WWE for much of 2013, The Shield have shown themselves to be an impressive unit. Combining the power of Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins’ athletic ability and the arrogance of Dean Ambrose, you can see why this group have made such a massive impression in their rookie year.
As with all teams in professional wrestling, there will inevitably come a point where one member begins to out-grow the rest of the group, eventually causing a split – at which point, each superstar will either sink or swim on their own. In the case of The Shield, the cracks are now beginning to show.
From a company perspective, I think they’re creating these cracks because they’ve saturated the 6-man tag-team match format. Almost every episode of Raw over the past month has featured a 6-man tag-team match involving The Shield. It’s not that I have a problem with that, it’s just that it starts to become a little predictable after a while.
The few matches where I’ve seen the members of The Shield wrestling in singles matches have only made me want to see each member go their own way even more.
In my opinion, Roman Reigns is the The Shield’s stand-out performer. I’d hazard a guess that the majority of the WWE Universe feel the same way. He looks like a guy who could be topping the card for years to come and he’s stood out from his team-mates, who are both impressive in their own right.
I believe Roman Reigns will be a future WWE World Heavyweight Champion. He may even be the guy who carries the torch and leads the company forward over the next 5-10 years. I can see Seth Rollins being a solid mid-carder, which leaves Dean Ambrose as my pick of the 3 who won’t last the distance. I suspect he needs The Shield more than the other two do right now!
The question remains – when should the decision makers in the WWE call time on The Shield? Undoubtedly, they’ve struck gold with this group and won’t want to call time on them prematurely. However, the current storyline playing out suggests that their time will be called sooner rather than later.
All of this makes me wonder whether we could see a member of The Shield breaking away to win this year’s Royal Rumble…
