With WWE celebrating 25 years of the Cerebral Assassin, I felt it necessary to share five matches from Triple H’s back catalogue that you can check out before the all of the hullabaloo kicks off tonight.
My Favourite:
Vs. Undertaker – Wrestlemania 28
Full disclosure here, I’m biassed on this one as I was fortunate enough to attend Wrestlemania 28. While I would still have enjoyed the match from the comfort of my own home, my affinity for this Hell In A Cell/End Of An Era bout is definitely underpinned by fond memories of a fantastic holiday.
You all know the story, best friends Triple H and Shawn Michaels had taken turns to try and best The Undertaker on the grandest stage thus ending his undefeated streak at the show. Michaels went as far as putting his career on the line, and losing, while Triple H came extremely close in a visceral contest only one year prior.
Short of a triple threat match between the three, this Special Guest Referee, Hell In A Cell match was the best-case scenario to end this four Mania storyline with HBK donning the black and white stripes.
An instant classic.

The Hidden Gem:
Vs. Eddie Guerrero – Raw 2004
Rewind to March of 2004, a post Wrestlemania XX decision was made to ‘shake things up a bit’ and the WWE Draft returned.
During the March 22nd edition of Raw, Triple H was shockingly drafted to Smackdown and, as a result, was awarded a WWE Championship match against Eddie Guerrero in the main event. The two battled it out over a couple of segments that was an exciting look into what the Smackdown main event scene was about to look like but, as with most of these brand loyalty events, the match came to an abrupt end as both rosters ended the show with an all-out brawl.
Not the long, back and forth, definitively finished match we wanted between Triple H and peak Eddie Guerrero but it’s what we have and that’s not a bad thing.

The One Everyone Loves:
Vs. Daniel Bryan – Wrestlemania 30
Another Wrestlemania and another feature match for The Game. This time, a grand stage catalyst of a bout that assisted Daniel Bryan to succeed in his night of glory by defeating three-quarters of Evolution and capturing the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
The one lasting criticism of this match is that it was clear from the outset that there was no way Bryan would be losing but don’t let that mar your opinion of what has been heralded as the greatest opening match in Wrestlemania history.
Don’t remember it? Go back and remind yourself.

The Underrated One:
With Randy Orton & Batista Vs. The Shield – Extreme Rules
Coming off of losing to Daniel Bryan at Wrestlemania, the three active members of Evolution found themselves on the opposite side of the ring to WWE’s most popular faction, The Shield.
The trifecta of Rollins, Reigns and Ambrose had already ploughed through the likes of Kane, Daniel Bryan, Ryback, John Cena & Sheamus on their way to the lofty heights we now know they achieved and the nostalgic roadblock formed by the aforementioned Flair-less trio looked to halt their ascension.
An action-packed brawl from six of WWE’s finest which was ultimately cheapened by a lacklustre sequel and Rollins’ eventual heel turn.

The One That Gives Back:
Vs. Shelton Benjamin – Raw 2004
Going back to the aforementioned 2004 Draft now and Triple H managed to find himself being drafted back to Raw only days later and when the March 29th edition of the show aired, it was as if nothing had changed at all. Only, it had.
Former WWE Tag Team Champion and one half of the World’s Greatest Tag Team, Shelton Benjamin was moved to Raw as part of the prior week’s draft and while we hadn’t seen much in terms of individuality from Benjamin, he soon found himself thrust into Raw’s main event scene and in a match with Triple H.
Perceived as the underdog, Benjamin managed to get the better of Triple H (thanks to a distraction from a Ric Flair/Chris Benoit altercation) and instantly looked like a star. Trips and Shelton would go on to have a series of matches that only helped further establish both Benjamin as a serious contender on the Raw roster and Triple H as being a veteran who is willing to give back to help the business/younger stars.
